Toyota Alphard summary

Launched way back in 2002, the Toyota Alphard is a luxurious MPV, targeting wealthy connoisseurs who prefer elegant space and comfort. This luxury minivan was offered in seven-and-eight seater configurations, with Petrol and diesel engine options.

In 2005, the Alphard received a facelift, which included a new rear lamp design and the addition of 16" and 17" aluminum-alloy wheels. Safety-wise, Alphard scored full six stars in the JNCAP crash tests.

The FT-MV concept was first shown in 2007, and in May 2008, it was turned into a production version, dubbed Alphard. A new sub-model, the Toyota Vellfire, was introduced for this generation. According to Toyota's press release, the Alphard was defined as having an attractive and sophisticated look, while the Vellfire stresses power and strong individualism.

The Toyota Alphard combines luxury and style. Its elegance and sophistication are matched by an equally remarkable drive, as well as specs and extra amenities. Moreover, though the Alphard costs a bit on the expensive side, people relate the Toyota brand to quality and durability. They are ready to pay a premium for the hassle-free ownership experience.

Powering the Alphard was either a 2.4 liter (2362 cc) four-cylinder diesel engine or a 3.0 liter (2995 cc) V6 petrol engine.

The Toyota Alphard was offered in both diesel and petrol fuel types.

Both the engines on the Toyota Alphard came mated to an automatic transmission.

Toyota Alphard LATEST UPDATES

The Toyota Alphard, the parent of the Innova, was introduced way back in the year 2002. With the Alphard, Toyota seeks to appeal to affluent consumers who care about personal luxury space, opulent comfort, and uniqueness.

The Toyota Alphard was offered only in two variants — 2.4 and 3.0 V6.

It comes in four attractive color options — Black, Graphite, Pearl White, and Burning Black.

Top features on the Alphard include keyless entry, power steering, AC, CD player, touch screen infotainment system, automatic lights, one-touch-down power windows, steering mounted audio controls, adjustable steering, dual-zone automatic climate control, and powered rear doors. Safety features on the Alphard include seven Airbags, an Anti-lock braking system with Electronic brake force distribution, Brake Assist, Traction Control, and a parking camera with sensors.

The Toyota Alphard was available only in two variants in the Indian market, priced between Rs 40 and 45 lakh (Ex-showroom).

The Alphard had no direct rivals in the market then.

  • Things We Like
  • Things we don’t like

The Toyota Alphard boasts an immense road presence. This enormous MPV makes even the Innova look small in front of it.

Thanks to the high-set cabin of the Alphard, the visibility from the driver's seat is excellent.

The seat comfort on the Alphard is exceptional. The cushioning is spot on, and they snug you nicely in them, making you extremely comfortable.

All its three rows are immensely spacious and can accommodate passengers comfortably.

The Alphard offers loads of safety to its occupants. In fact, it scored full six stars in the JNCAP crash tests.

Toyota's bulletproof reliability backs the Alphard. Over the years, the Alphard has proven to be incredibly dependable.

Despite its massive size, the Alphard is relatively easy to drive.

The Alphard is extremely rare in the market. Owning it gives you a sense of exclusivity.

Though the Alphard boasts a significant road presence, its exterior design doesn't justify its price. It looks like an ordinary minivan.

The Toyota Alphard had a very high sticker price.

The Alphard did not have a manual gearbox on offer.

The interior doesn't feel all that upmarket, especially considering the price range. The materials used inside the cabin seem pretty basic for a vehicle of this class.

Despite carrying the luxury MPV tag, the features list on the Alphard are fairly standard and won't wow you in any way. Equipment like electric adjustment for the rear seat, and rear entertainment screens, would have made the Alphard more desirable.

Ride comfort on the Alphard isn't all that plush. More than one would want in a luxury MPV. There is a hint of stiffness to the ride.

Boot space is extremely limited with the rear seats in place.

The Alphard could have done better cabin insulation, as road noise becomes a bit evident at high speeds.

Toyota Alphard EXPERT REVIEWS

The Toyota Alphard is a full-size luxury minivan. Its production began in 2002, and it has consistently maintained a fashionable and polished appearance. The Alphard is one of the most comfortable minivans on the market, and it's ideal for getting your family from one town to the next in comfort. It's also used to transport firm associates and high-ranking people to and from airports and hotels. However, you would have appreciated a plusher ride and better cabin insulation. Moreover, the Alphard doesn’t seem to wow you in terms of features, as it only gets the primary job done.

The best features on the Alphard include keyless entry, power steering, AC, CD player, touch screen infotainment system, automatic lights, one-touch-down power windows, steering mounted audio controls, adjustable steering, dual-zone automatic climate control, and powered rear doors. Safety features on the Alphard include seven Airbags, an Anti-lock braking system with Electronic brake force distribution, Brake Assist, Traction Control, and a parking camera with sensors.

The Alphard features a fantastic driving experience because of Toyota's well-proven front-wheel-drive system, which is found in many vehicles. For a top-heavy car like the Alphard, the driveability and handling are remarkable.

At this expensive price range, it's hard to get convinced by the Alphard. However, the amount of real estate that the Alphard offers will not let you miss the lavish rooms of your home, and there are the spectacular seats, offering supreme comfort. Toyota's bulletproof reliability does give you that peace of mind as well. In conclusion, if you need something huge, comfortable, and to stand out from the crowd, the Alphard can be on your list.
