The Volvo S60 is a mid-size executive automobile produced and marketed by Volvo since 2000. The first version (2000–2009) was introduced in 2000 to replace the S70, and it was built on the P2 platform. It had a similar-looking estate counterpart, the Volvo V70, as well as a sports version, the Volvo S60 R. The ECC concept car and the S80 were used as inspiration for the design. The Volvo S60 sedan is better suited to pamper its passengers than to raise their pulse rates. Volvo takes a different approach in a class where cars with truly aggressive driving qualities and gutsy engine options are the norm. On the outside, it is really distinctive, yet it also appears to be very classy and striking. On the inside, the cabin has a distinct Scandinavian flair and is tastefully fitted and completed, with a long list of amenities. The long-wheelbase provides plenty of interior room, and the seats are also extremely comfy. You do, however, sit quite low in the rear. The S60 isn't as fun-to-drive as its competitors, and Volvo's dealership network isn't very extensive, either. Altogether, the Volvo S60 clearly focuses on quality, comfort, refinement, and luxury rather than outright athleticism.
As soon as you get behind the wheel, you'll notice the S60's sense of refinement in the driving experience. There's only a distant hum, and the vehicle keeps moving effortlessly, whether it's in stop-and-go city traffic or out on the open road. The S60 is a comfortable and relaxing car to drive. At low speeds, the engine feels snappy, the steering is straight and perfectly weighted, and it also feels wonderfully stable and confident at high speeds. However, if you're hoping for some high-performance action, you'll be disappointed. The S60 is only interested in driving sedately. It's also nothing like the dynamics of a 3 Series in a corner, with plenty of body roll. On the plus side, the S60's suspension handles our rutted roadways rather admirably. It feels solid and confident at high speeds, with few movements entering the cabin.
Volvo's new S60 has a lot going for it. For starters, it has that seductive big-car feel that customers in this class crave. It has plenty of interior room, great levels of comfort, and material quality that rivals the best. Volvo has also equipped it with a lot of amenities, and no one comes close to matching the multitude of safety features and systems. So, if you're looking for a well-made, smartly styled premium car that's both soothing to drive and comfy to sit in, Volvo's new S60 has a lot to offer.
