The BMW 6 Series GT is not the first car that comes to mind when you think “BMW”. Positioned as a slightly larger alternative to the more traditional 5 Series, the 6GT carves out its niche by offering a unique blend of practicality and luxury. It gets unconventional looks which probably won’t appeal to sedan lovers as well as SUV fans. But judging it for what it is, the 6GT is a beautiful tourer that can do a weekday office run and a weekend road trip with just as much grace. Should it be the go-to option of its segment then? Let’s find out.

Pros

Cons

High-quality interior

The interior and exterior, while premium, feel a generation old

Spacious and practical

The spare wheel eats into boot space

Smooth and powerful engine

The tech on offer isn’t up to the latest standards

Exceptional ride comfort, thanks to air suspension

Isn’t as aesthetically pleasing as the 5 Series

Up front, the 6GT sports a bold look, thanks to sharp LED headlights and an aggressive front grille. The LED headlights also get laser technology, which extends visibility up to 650 metres. Frameless doors elevate the premium feel further, while The M Sport variant, in particular, stands out with its 19-inch alloys, blue brake callipers, and dual trapezoidal exhausts, emphasising the car's sporty edge. Being a GT, the roofline of the 6 Series flows towards the edge of the boot rather than the beginning, giving it a fastback-like silhouette. And the 6GT also rides higher than the sedans in its segment, making it as practical as a crossover. However, while the entire exterior package is appealing, the 6 Series GT is one of the only cars in BMW’s line-up that is yet to receive a facelift to bring it up to BMW’s latest design language. And thanks to the changes in all other BMW cars being prominent in this generation, the 6 Series appears a generation old right from first glance.

The cabin of the 6GT impresses with high-quality, luxurious materials all around, including lacquered wood, matte silver accents, and plenty of soft-touch materials. Twin 12.3-inch screens also deliver a tech-enriched experience, but they run on BMW’s older operating system, and the housing for the infotainment also looks like an afterthought. The transition to a more digital environment has streamlined the interior, but the removal of physical HVAC controls may not appeal to all. Rear seating remains a highlight, offering ample space and premium comfort. Boot space is also a massive SUVesque 610 litres, but a spare tyre eats into it.

The BMW 6GT gets a 2-axle air suspension as standard across the lineup, providing ride quality that balances plushness with agility. Simply change the driving mode to comfort, and the suspension will filter out most bumps and potholes. Sharper ones do filter through, especially at low speeds — thanks to the large 19-inch alloys — but it isn’t unnerving. The ability to adjust ride height adds a layer of practicality, aiding ingress and egress, as well as navigating challenging road conditions. The front seats feature a sportier design delivering enhanced support and will be loved by driving enthusiasts. Rear passengers are also treated to generous space and comfort, thanks to its form factor. Headroom and legroom here aren’t even a point of conversation, and the 6GT comfortably establishes itself as the most spacious of the segment at the back. The rear seat armrest though isn’t the most ergonomic, as it is a tad high.

Under the hood of the 6GT is a 2.0-litre in-line 4-cylinder petrol engine, which is a champ of performance as well as refinement. With 255 bhp and 400 Nm on tap, the 6GT always has enough performance on demand, be it making a quick overtake in urban conditions, or corner carving while on a road trip. The 8-speed automatic gearbox ensures smooth, responsive shifts, adapting seamlessly across driving modes. Thanks to this combination, the 6GT can be enjoyed by enthusiasts and chauffeur-driven audiences alike. Handling is precise, with the air suspension providing adjustable stiffness, which delivers a confident drive experience, whether cruising in comfort or engaging the corners in sports mode. However, the car’s size and weight are palpable.

With a 5-star rating from Euro NCAP, the safety systems on offer on the 6GT are proven to be reliable. Safety in the 6GT is bolstered by an extensive suite of features, which includes six airbags, dynamic stability control, and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). The 6 Series also gets a reverse park assist, which dynamically guides you into a tight parking spot, thereby giving its drivers some peace of mind.

At the heart of the 6GT’s tech offerings is a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, which gets wireless connectivity for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, advanced voice commands, and a Harman Kardon sound system. The transition to a fully digital interface has elevated the user experience, though the complexity of the iDrive system could pose a learning curve for some users. Along with the infotainment is another 12.3-inch screen for the digital instrument cluster, which displays a variety of driving information. However, as great the screens are, they don’t look as modern and cohesive to the interior as all the newer BMW models, and long for an upgrade, especially when compared to the screens of the lesser BMW 3 Series.

The BMW 6 Series GT sits as a unique offering in the Indian market, offering crossover levels of practicality with a sedan-like appeal. It gets a brisk powertrain, premium interiors, and an enviable air suspension that can be comfortable and dynamic. It also has a host of features on offer, and the rear seat space is also segment-leading. However, while almost all of the other BMW models have received facelifts or generation changes to bring them up to the current market standards and lend them new BMW design language, BMW is yet to do the same for the 6 Series GT. And given that a facelift will be due soon, buying the current 6GT would mean you will have a generation-old car which you paid a similar amount of money to buy, reducing its appeal.
