The Hyundai i20 N Line is a sporty variant of the popular Hyundai i20 hatchback. It features a more aggressive exterior design with sporty accents, such as a unique grille and alloy wheels. Under the hood, it offers a choice of powerful engines for a spirited driving experience. Inside, the i20 N Line boasts sporty seats and N Line branding. Overall, it combines style and performance in a compact package.
In the B-2 hatchback segment, there aren’t many models left that deliver great performance. Hot hatches like the Polo GT TSI, Abarth Punto, and the Baleno RS have left the Indian market, leaving a gap in the market for someone to take up the torch. And that is where the i20 N Line comes in. Stiffer suspension, new exhaust, and a powerful 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine that puts out 118 bhp build on the strong underpinnings of the standard i20. So, can the N Line carry the hot hatch segment on its shoulders?

Pros

Cons

Red accents add the finishing touches to the already sharp design

Pricey compared to the standard i20

Free revving turbo petrol sounds great with the N Line specific twin exhaust

Quality of plastics could have been better

Stiffer suspension is more dynamic, but isn’t too uncomfortable

Performance below 2,000 RPM is sluggish

Great NVH insulation

Feature-loaded

The i20 N Line's exterior design is marked by its distinctive elements that collectively create an impressive visual impact. The N Line gets a few notable differences over the standard car. There are red skirts on the front and rear bumper, and along the sides as well. The grille is slightly different, and so are the 16-inch diamond cut alloys, which sport the N Line logo on them instead of the Hyundai logo. There’s also a roof-mounted spoiler at the back, and the rear bumper is also new which sports new twin exhausts. There is also an exclusive paint shade called Thunder Blue, which coupled with the red accents looks fantastic.

Apart from the highlights, the N Line retains all of the standard i20’s design cues. The body features a multitude of carefully crafted creases that not only contribute to its aesthetic allure but also lend an air of dynamic energy. The car boasts a sleek profile that seamlessly combines with its broad dimensions, projecting a sense of robustness and presence on the road. The judicious restraint in the use of chrome is a refreshing touch, exemplified by a single chrome strip adorning the rear. While some critics might argue that the design is overly busy, the i20's skillfully integrated shoulder lines add a touch of sophistication to the overall look. The black roof provides a tasteful element of contrast, elevating the car's visual appeal. With a ground clearance of 170 mm and complemented by 16-inch rims, the Hyundai i20 N Line strikes a harmonious balance between its sporty aspirations and practical attributes.

The Hyundai i20 N Line's interior design exudes a sense of quality, although there is room for improvement in the choice of plastics used. The focus on enhancing user experience is evident through the plush feel of main touch points such as the armrest and steering wheel. A sunroof adds a touch of luxury, while convenient modern features like a wireless charger cater to today's tech-savvy drivers. Faux leather upholstery on the seats adds to the overall comfort and aesthetics. Specific to the N Line are red accents throughout the cabin, including piping on the seats, stitching, and finishing touches on the AC vents. The steering is also different from the standard car, and is great to hold. Manual variants also get a very beautiful shifter knob which looks like it belongs to a much more expensive sports car. The car's interior layout is well thought out, with a spacious glove box and dedicated spots for bottles and small items. While the 311-litre boot capacity is satisfactory, it's worth considering soft duffle bags over hard shell suitcases to better utilise space.

The Hyundai i20 N Line excels in providing comfort, particularly evident in its generous rear space that accommodates three passengers due to the car's width. Rear AC vents ensure a pleasant environment, complemented by convenient charging points. While an armrest is present in the rear, the absence of cup or bottle holders is a minor inconvenience. The N Line’s seats stand out for their quality, especially those in the front, ensuring a comfortable ride for all occupants. Interestingly, despite adopting a 30% stiffer suspension, the N Line continues to round off bumps and potholes well. Its usability over rough roads remains unhurt, and the added stiffness has improved its highway manners.

Before the facelift, the i20 got two engine choices. Both were available in almost all variants. With the facelift, Hyundai has bifurcated the variant options for both engines. The 1.2-litre naturally aspirated engine powers all standard variants of the i20, while the 1.0-litre turbo now exclusively does duty in the N Line variants, just like on the Venue. The turbo petrol engine on offer puts out a healthy 118 bhp and 172 Nm of torque, which is plenty to put smiles on your face. The engine is rev happy, and the new exhaust also generates a beautiful soundtrack. However, while there’s plenty of punch in the mid and top end of the rev band, the low end is where the engine struggles, especially below 2,000 RPM. The engine can be mated to either a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed DCT automatic gearbox, and the manual is the pick of the lot. The shifts are slick, and the shifter itself is so beautifully crafted that you would want to pick the manual variant just for the shifter. The 7-DCT also does a good job of rowing through gears, but it isn’t as fast as you’d expect it to be.

With the N Line, Hyundai has also changed the suspension setup of the car. The new dampers are 30% stiffer than the standard i20, and that combined with the slightly heavier and more direct steering wheel have made a world of difference to the driving dynamics. The i20 N Line feels noticeably more connected to drive, and the ability to dart into corners combined with the powerful engine and the new exhaust translates to a very engaging experience. Highway manners have also improved courtesy of the stiffer dampers, reducing body roll and floatiness. The N Line also gets disc brakes at all four corners, which add to the stopping power.

The safety credentials of the Hyundai i20 N Line are underlined by a comprehensive array of features, ensuring both driver and passengers are well-protected on the road. With a 3-star Global NCAP rating, the i20 demonstrates its commitment to safety. Six airbags serve as a crucial defence in case of a collision, while the inclusion of ISOFIX anchors enhances child safety. The Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) keeps drivers informed about tire conditions, contributing to overall road safety. Advanced braking technologies like ABS, EBD, and Brake Assist (BA) work cohesively to offer precise control and reduced stopping distances. On top of the standard i20, the N Line also gets disc brakes at the rear for added stopping power and safety. The i20 N Line also features Electronic Stability Program (ESP) and Traction Control, bolstering stability and preventing skidding during challenging road conditions.

The i20 N Line is a testament to modern technology and advanced infotainment in the realm of hatchbacks. Its 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility, offers seamless connectivity and entertainment options. Bluelink technology elevates its connectivity further, allowing remote control and monitoring of various vehicle functions. The Bose music system ensures a high-quality auditory experience, making every drive a pleasure. The convenience of automatic climate control, parking sensors, and a reverse camera makes navigating and parking effortless. Adaptive features such as cruise control, keyless entry, and push-button start add to the overall convenience and sophistication. The digital instrument cluster provides essential information at a glance, enhancing the driving experience. Despite its abundant technological features, the i20 N Line maintains a premium feel that sets it apart in its segment. The comprehensive technology package not only positions the i20 as a premium-feeling hatchback but also ensures its longevity, as its rich feature set is poised to remain relevant and modern for years to come.

With an ex-showroom price of over ₹12 lakhs for the top end variant, the Hyundai i20 N Line is not a budget hatchback, and you are well into compact SUV territory. But what you do get for your money should you buy the Hyundai i20 N Line is a spirited, fun to drive hatchback that can make even some sedans and compact SUVs look under equipped. It is a driver’s car that does command a premium, but also delivers smiles and giggles in exchange. It’s a comfortable, reliable and engaging hatchback that will age gracefully and cover mile after mile without breaking a sweat.
