Mahindra XUV300

<p>The XUV300 is an offspring of an already existing model that was part of the Ssangyong lineup when Mahindra purchased the moniker. But to fit it into the subcompact segment, Mahindra reduced its length by over 200 mm. The result was a small SUV with a relatively large bonnet, but no rear overhang, making it look a tad disproportionate. And what looked only disproportionate at the time of launch now looks dated as well, since it has received few updates over its life cycle. Despite this, the XUV300 does possess bold shoulder lines and a muscular bonnet, making the silhouette more SUVesque than some rivals like the Hyundai Venue. What it desperately needs though, is a thorough facelift.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p><p>&nbsp;</p>

<p>Inside, the story is similar, marked by a generation-old dashboard design that lacks modernity. However, the cabin does offer commendable space and comfort, with features like a sunroof enhancing the experience. The overall package might leave buyers craving for more, but the good news here is that the XUV400 EV — which shares most bits with the XUV300 — has recently received an update getting new interiors, and that should make its way to the 300 as well.</p><p>&nbsp;</p>

<p>Seating in the XUV300 offers plenty of support and comfort, with the front row offering ample adjustability. Given that the XUV300 is based on a larger SUV that was sawed short, the space in the back row is also generous by segment standards, since most of the compromise has been made on boot space. Three abreast at the back will still be a squeeze, given its narrow width. Suspension tuning also focuses on delivering a smooth ride across varying terrains, effectively balancing comfort with performance.&nbsp;</p><p>&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Mahindra XUV300 has three engines on offer — two petrol units and a diesel mill. The diesel unit is a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder engine which puts out 115 bhp and 300 Nm torque. Performance on this variant is easy, with minimal turbo lag. However, what's most impressive about this engine is its refinement. While you can still hear it, vibrations are kept in check, and the engine note is not coarse.&nbsp;</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The two petrol powertrains on offer are derivatives of each other, with different tunes and turbochargers. The standard version puts out 109 bhp and 200 Nm, and while those figures are the lowest of the three, they’re still respectable and can easily be sufficient for someone who drives mostly in urban areas. The ‘TurboSport’ variant on the other hand puts out 129 bhp and 230 Nm of torque, delivering a good punch. On top of that, it also gets an ‘overboost’ function, which elevates the torque by a further 20 Nm for a short duration. 0-100 km/h in this variant takes as little as 10.8 seconds, making it the enthusiast’s pick, but Mahindra hasn’t retuned the suspension to offer better dynamics, which is a let-down. All the engines are offered with a 6-speed manual gearbox, and apart from the TurboSport, the other two engines also get the option of a 6-speed AMT automatic gearbox. The AMT gearbox is surprisingly smooth when compared to other AMTs in the market, and it is fast to react too, making it an easy pick for urban users.</p>

<p>Mahindra has not compromised in equipping the XUV300 with an array of safety features and a strong chassis that have contributed to its 5-star Global NCAP rating. Its safety suite includes six airbags, ABS with EBD, disc brakes on all four wheels, ESC, front parking sensors, and ISOFIX child seat mounts, ensuring peace of mind for its occupants.&nbsp;</p><p>&nbsp;</p>

<p>The XUV300’s infotainment system lacks the cutting-edge features and seamless connectivity options found in some competitors. While it does offer essential functionalities and a responsive interface, the absence of wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto — among other modern conveniences — dampens the overall user experience. However, this problem could also resolve itself once the XUV300 gets the XUV400 EV’s updated interiors.</p><p>&nbsp;</p>

<p>Given that the subcompact SUV segment is one of the most popular segments in the country, it also faces stiff competition. Its rivals — the Tata Nexon, Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Hyundai Venue, and Kia Sonet — have all received thorough updates, giving them great styling, tons of features, a variety of powertrains, and luxurious interiors. And for people who want something slightly low-slung, there’s also the Maruti Suzuki Fronx that is stealing buyers from this segment. Amongst these vehicles, the Mahindra XUV300 sits as a sub-par offering, wearing the oldest clothes. It does get some good fundamentals like punchy engines, spacious interiors, and some unique features like adjustable steering modes. However, what it desperately needs is a thorough makeover to bring it up to speed with its rivals.</p>
