Skoda India is evaluating the feasibility of introducing a CNG-powered version of the Kylaq SUV. Brand Director Ashish Gupta confirmed that a CNG option is "definitely on the table," but still in early evaluation stages, particularly regarding turbo engine compatibility.
Skoda has been experimenting with integrating CNG with its 1.0-litre TSI turbo-petrol engine, which was first introduced in the Rapid. The company aims to ensure compatibility before bringing this powertrain option to market in India.
While Skoda India hasn’t launched any CNG-powered models yet, the brand does have experience with CNG models globally—offering CNG options in vehicles like the Octavia, Scala, and Citigo.
If launched, the Kylaq CNG will be only the second turbocharged CNG vehicle on sale in India after the Tata Nexon CNG. The move could significantly expand Skoda’s reach as CNG vehicles grow in popularity due to fuel efficiency and lower running costs.
The CNG version of the Kylaq is likely to be based on the existing 1.0-litre TSI engine (116PS/178Nm). However, the CNG variant may see slightly reduced power and torque, and is expected to be offered only with a 6-speed manual gearbox to maintain cost-effectiveness.
