While the COVID-19 pandemic delayed a number of car launches this year, there are about 11 luxury sedans set to be launched in India in 2020 and 2021. Let’s take a look at what they are.

Mercedes-Benz A-Class Sedan

Mercedes-Benz A-Class Sedan
Expected Launch 5 October, 2020
Engine Turbocharged Petrol, 1.5L Turbocharged Diesel
Transmission 7-Speed Dual-Clutch Automatic

While Mercedes has already announced and is successfully selling the LWB (Long Wheel Base) version of the A-Class Sedan in China exclusively, the company did confirm that India will also get the pleasure of driving the A-Class sometime in 2020. We still don’t know whether we will get the exclusive LWB variant from China or the standard variant but since the LWB version of the E-Class did exceedingly well in the country, our bets are on the LWB A-Class making it over into India as well. Powering the upcoming A-Class sedan will be a BSVI-compliant, 1330cc Turbocharged petrol engine that offers 163PS of power and 250Nm of torque, and is mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. There is another version that houses a BSVI-complaint 1.5L Turbocharged diesel engine that is capable of generating 116Ps of power and 260Nm of torque. The diesel engine is also paired with a 7-speed automatic transmission. When launched, the A-Class Sedan will most likely take on cars like the BMW 1 Series and the Audi A3 which are already high-selling cars in the market.

Volkswagen Passat 2020

Expected Launch 10 October, 2020
Engine 2.0L Turbocharged Petrol
Transmission 6-Speed Automatic

Volkswagen is a company that has always delivered some of the most reliable cars in the market and the Passat 2020 looks to be following in that pathway. The Passat is already being considered as one of the finest sedans in the country and it hasn’t even been launched yet. Under the hood of the Passat sits a 2.0L Turbocharged petrol engine that produces an impressive 174Ps of power and 206Nm of torque. Paired to the powerful engine is a 6-speed automatic transmission which is also combined with Front Wheel Drive capabilities. In terms of looks, the Passat 2020 comes with a sleek design and a muscular bonnet. The front grille is sharp and has chrome slats horizontally across the front of the car. The LED headlamps are rectangular in shape while the rear of the car is more angular. The inside of the Passat is spacious and comfortable, like most Volkswagen cars. There is a 6.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system that comes with Google Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity. There is a secondary 8.0-inch navigation screen that is connected to a premium audio setup.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class 2020

Expected Launch 10 December, 2020
Engine 2.0L Turbocharged Petrol, 3.0L Diesel
Transmission 9-Speed Automatic

Considered as the discounted S-Class, the upcoming E-Class 2020 carries all the luxury but leaves behind the hefty price tag from the most premium sedan from Mercedes-Benz. The body of the upcoming E-Class looks quite similar to the previous iteration but there are a few upgrades and new inclusions. The brake lights are now wider than they used to be on the older E-Class and the headlamps also get brand new LED lights in them. The alloy wheels have also been redesigned. The front grille has also been changed up a bit with the standard version getting a curved up design whereas the AMG variants get a more aggressive-looking swept down grille design. On the AMG variants, Mercedes has also included “power domes” or bulges on the bonnet that give the car a deeper sound when revving the engine. Under the hood, the new E-Class 2020 comes with a BSVI-compliant 2.0L Inline 4petrol engine that is capable of generating 255Ps of power and 273Nm of torque and is mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission gearbox. There is also a BSVI-complaint 3.0L V6 diesel engine that will produce 362Ps of power and 369Nm of torque along with a 9-speed automatic gearbox. Inside, the E-Class 2020 will come with dual 10-inch touchscreen displays which can be upgraded to larger, 12-inch displays. Some of the other features include “Hey Mercedes” voice assistant, 360-degree surround-view camera, blind-spot monitoring, and all the other high-tech equipment you can expect from a Mercedes-Benz premium sedan.

Tesla Model S

Expected Launch 14 January, 2021
Acceleration 0-100 Kmph in 2.3 Seconds
Range 560 Kms

The flagship car from the popular carmaker is finally on its way to India and the Tesla Model S has so much to offer the Indian market. The Model S has already taken on and beaten its competition including the Audi A8, the BMW 7-Series, and the Mercedes-Benz S-Class in Europe and the United States and is ready to take on any other electric vehicle that comes its way. The sedan is currently available in three different variants but we don’t expect all of them to make it to India. The onboard battery is powerful enough to take the Model S from 0-100 Kmph in an extremely quick 2.3 seconds and is capable of offering a range of 560 Kms when fully charged. We don’t know exactly what we can expect from Tesla when the Model S finally reaches the country but we will have to wait to see when the company makes its way over.

Volvo S60 2020

Expected Launch 15 August, 2020
Engine 2.0L 4-Cylinder Turbo Petrol
Transmission 8-Speed Automatic

In an industry that is consumed by a sudden trend of SUV enthusiasm, the 2020 Volvo S60 is more a breath of fresh air that one might think. Although this sedan is based on the same platform as its 7-seater compatriot – the XC90, the new S60 offers the old-school customer so much more. For starters, the car is powered only by petrol engines and will not use diesel as an option anytime soon. There are hybrid options though, that could find the interest of some buyers. Currently, in the UK, Volvo offers the 2020 S60 in a total of 5 variants – all of which will now house a BSVI-compliant 2.0L 4-cylinder Turbo-petrol engine. The T4 and T5 variants will offer 190bhp and 250bhp respectively as well as automatic transmission and Front-Wheel-Drive. A 306bhp All-Wheel-Drive T6 engine is also available while a couple of T8 petrol and plug-in hybrid engines offering 400bhp complete the list. How many of these variants will actually make it to India is unknown but we can at least expect the T4 and T5 models to feature this year. While Volvo is a company that has been releasing cars regularly since 2014, most of the models feature similar exteriors as well as interiors and that trend carried over to the 2020 S60 as well. A touchscreen panel is fitted into the center console in portrait style which is easy to use and helps control the car settings quicker. In terms of audio, the car houses a Bowers & Wilkins stereo setup that provides top-quality sound. The rest of the interiors include leather-clad seats, a leather steering wheel, digital dashboard and instrument cluster, air condition vents, and power windows among others.

KIA Stinger

Expected Launch 1 April, 2021
Engine 2.0L Petrol, 3.3L Twin Turbo V6 Petrol, 2.2L Diesel
Transmission 8-Speed Automatic

If you are in the market for a premium sedan, we believe that the upcoming KIA Stinger is probably on the best options for you. However, you will have to wait a bit as the car is set to launch in April 2021 and with the current situation, we don’t know if that date will be pushed back further or not. Nevertheless, the Stinger is something worth waiting for. It looks absolutely stunning with sharp lines and curves that give it a sporty and aggressive look. Powering the Stinger will be a 2.0L petrol engine that generates 247Ps of power and 353Nm of torque. There will also be a GT variant of the Stinger which is a performance-based variant and that will come with a 3.3L Twin-Turbo V6 petrol engine that offer 370Ps of power with 510Nm of torque. Petrol engines are not the only option as KIA is also set to launch the Stinger with a single 2.2L diesel engine that will offer 200Ps of power and 440Nm of torque. All the engines will come with an 8-speed automatic transmission system and with Rear-Wheel-Drive as standard and All-Wheel-Drive as an option. The Stinger will also be feature-rich with some of them being a flat-bottom steering wheel, high-quality Nappa leather upholstery, an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and a 7-inch digital touchscreen instrument cluster.

Audi A3 2021

Expected Launch 9 April, 2021
Engine 2.0L Petrol, 2.0L Diesel
Transmission 7-Speed DCT

If there was one car that was majorly anticipated in India, it has to be the A3 2021. The previous iteration has already done extremely well in the country and the updated version is ready to bring even more. Audi is expected to include a BSVI-compliant 2.0L Turbocharged-petrol engine in the A3 2021 which is expected to produce an impressive 245Ps of power. There could also be an option for a 2.0L diesel engine that might make it to India but we are not certain about that since diesel cars are quite popular in the country. The Audi A3 2021 engine will be paired with a 7-speed Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT auto). The biggest change we can expect from the upcoming A3 2021 is its looks. The new A3 2021 will come with an aggressive-looking front grille with a hexagonal shape to it. The new LED headlamps look extremely stylish and sleek and the large air dams below that also carry a geometric shape to it. The body of the A3 2021 now features sharp curves and angular lines that give it a very aggressive look overall.

BMW 5 Series 2021

Expected Launch 10 May, 2021
Engine 2.0L Turbo-Petrol, 3.0L Turbo-Petrol, 4.4L Twin-Turbo V8 Petrol
Transmission 8-Speed Automatic

BMW’s 5 Series has always been a favourite in India as well as around the world. It carries the perfect combination of elegance, power, and stylish looks. Although we can expect only a few models form the upcoming 5 Series 2021 to reach Indian shores, we do have a lot to get excited about. The BMW 5 Series 2021 will now come with a choice between 3 different engines; a 2.0L Turbo-petrol, a 3.0L Turbo-petrol hybrid, and a 4.4L Twin-Turbo V8 petrol. The 2.0L engine will generate 248Ps of power along with 258Nm of torque while the 3.0L engine is set to offer 335Ps of power with 332Nm of torque. Finally, the 4.4L V8 engine is expected to produce an impressive 523Ps of power with 553Nm of torque. All the engines will come paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission system. BMW will be offering some of the latest features available on the 5 Series 2021, including WiFi hotspot, satellite radio, Bluetooth connectivity, a 12.3-inch infotainment system with Google Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, and lane control assistance. The overall look of the new 5 Series has also changed a bit from its previous iterations with the front grille now getting taller and wider. There are also new “L” shape DRLs on the LED headlamps and the same “L” shape carries into the new LED taillights. The air dams in front have also gotten a bit bigger while the new alloy wheels now range from 18-20 inches in size. Being one of the most old cars from the BMW lineup, we can expect the new 5 Series 2021 to be an instant hit in India.

BMW 2 Series

Expected Launch 10 June 2021
Engine 2.0L Turbocharged Petrol, 3.0L Turbocharged Petrol
Transmission 8-Speed Automatic

While we are not too excited about the 2020 BMW 2 Series reaching India anytime in the near future, it does have a lot of potential for becoming a huge name in the market. BMW has announced that the 2 Series will be made available as a coupe as well as a convertible and named 230i and M240i respectively. Although there are not a lot of changes in the upcoming 2 Series models from their previous iterations, it’s the engines that are the main focus. The 230i will house a BSVI-compliant 2.0L Turbocharged petrol engine capable of generating 248Ps of power and 258Nm of torque. On the other hand, the more powerful M240i will get a BSVI-compliant 3.0L In-Line Turbocharged petrol engine that will produce 335Ps of power along with 369Nm of torque. While both the models will come paired with an 8-speed automatic gearbox, the M340i will have the option for a 6-speed manual transmission as well. BMW has also included 17-inch and 18-inch allow wheels on the 230i and M240i respectively. LED headlamps, keyless entry, automatic wipers, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, drowsy driver warning, and a high-end infotainment system with audio are just some of the features found on both the new 2 Series. If the BMW 2 Series does not make its way to India, interested buyers can check out a second hand car evaluation tool to get the best price on their current cars so that they get maximum savings when importing the vehicle into the country.

Mercedes-Benz CLA 2020

Expected Launch 22 December, 2020
Engine 2.0L Turbo-Petrol
Transmission 7-Speed Automatic

Carrying a sleek coupe-like design, the upgraded Mercedes-Benz CLA 2020 sedan is bound to turn heads in India. The car is fitted with a BSVI-complaint 2.0L 4-cylinder Turbocharged petrol engine that comes with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission that pushes all the power to the 4MATIC All-Wheel-Drive system. The powerful engine is capable of generating 302Ps of power with 295Nm of torque which is more than enough to take on the Indian roads. In terms of features, the CLA 2020 comes with bright LED headlamps as well as taillights, dual 7-inch touchscreen displays for the instrument cluster and the infotainment system that supports MBUX technology. There is also Google Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity with Bluetooth connectivity as standard. Given the fact that the previous CLA was one of the most used cars in the Mercedes lineup, the new model might get people reaching for their RC transfer papers sooner rather than later.

Tesla Model 3

Expected Launch 15 January, 2021

The Model 3 from Tesla is one of the most popular cars in their lineup and is definitely going to turn heads in the country. With EVs already becoming extremely popular in India, we can expect that the Model 3 will also find the interest of the interested buyers.
