McLaren sells a rather small range of vehicles in India. Both the models in its lineup are extremely powerful and highly exotic. While they guarantee immense road presence, they might not suit every use case type. For instance, these vehicles aren’t high on luxury or off-road capability. Both of these vehicles are purpose-built, thoroughbred performance machines that can transport you from between places really fast. However, their low clearance and sharp controls make them unsuitable for bad roads.  

While both the McLaren cars in India offer immense power, sharp handling and aggressive design, they’re built for different purposes. In essence, they’re similar owing to the same body type. However, they have been built for different purposes. Here is a detailed look at McLaren models currently available in India and what each brings to the table. 

Supercars

The McLaren 750S falls into this segment. It’s low-slung, track-tuned and offers extreme performance.  Low, wide, and brutally fast. It delivers explosive acceleration and razor-sharp handling. While it is still extremely fast, the GT focuses more on ride comfort, luggage space, and daily usability compared to other McLaren models.

Performance is the heart of every McLaren.Both McLaren models in India use a twin-turbocharged V8 petrol engine. Both have an aggressive performance. This is due to a high power output coupled with the lightweight construction. The McLaren 750S, for instance, can sprint from 0-100 km/h in under 3 seconds! Handling is sharp and track-focussed.

All McLaren cars in India come with automatic dual-clutch transmissions. Gear shifts are extremely quick. In sportier driving modes, shifts feel aggressive and sharp. In normal driving, the transmission remains smooth but still focused. Drive modes usually include:

Ride and Ground Clearance: Begin by testing the suspension lift system, which is essential for Indian speed breakers. The 750S can now deploy this in just 4 seconds. Observe how the Proactive Damping Control on the GT or the updated dampers on the 750S handle broken tarmac. While the 750S is firmer, the GT offers surprising suppleness.

Handling and Steering: McLaren famously retains electro-hydraulic steering. On your drive, feel for the feedback through the rim, which remains uncorrupted by the artificial weight common in electric systems. Note how the 750S feels more agile due to its 6mm wider front track and quicker steering ratio compared to the 720S.

Braking: Unlike many rivals, McLaren avoids regenerative braking to preserve pedal feel. On the test drive, you may notice the pedal requires a firmer, more deliberate push. Observe how the active rear wing on the 750S doubles as an air brake. 

Safety for McLaren’s Indian lineup is built around a "safety cell" philosophy rather than just electronic gadgets. Both cars utilise a high-strength Carbon Fibre Monocoque (MonoCell II for the GT and the advanced Monocage II for the 750S). This provides immense structural rigidity and impact protection while keeping the vehicle lightweight. 

Standard Safety Kit: Both models come equipped with four airbags,  covering driver, passenger, and side impacts. They also offer the essential electronics like ABS with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Traction Control, and Electronic Stability Control (ESC). The 750S specifically features Carbon Ceramic brakes as standard to ensure fade-free performance during high-speed deceleration.

Driver Assistance: For the daily challenges of Indian traffic, both cars feature front and rear parking sensors, a rear-view camera (upgraded to a 360-degree system in the 750S), and a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS).

Specialised Systems: The 750S introduces Variable Drift Control (VDC), allowing drivers to safely adjust the level of electronic intervention. Additionally, both cars feature an overspeed warning (beeping at 80kmph and 120kmph) to comply with Indian road safety regulations.

Inside, the entire cabin layout is focused towards the driver. The cabin is minimalistic and functional. These cars have low-placed seats, while the steering wheels are compact. There’s a gamut of information that’s provided by multiple digital displays.  

Materials used inside include: Premium leather, Alcantara, Carbon fibre and Aluminium. The McLaren GT offers higher practicality. It offers a total of 570 litres of storage (420L rear, 150L front). Inside, soft-grain leather and dual-zone climate control prioritise touring comfort.

Conversely, the 750S is more driver-centric, featuring weight-saving Alcantara and Carbon Fibre Racing Seats. While more cramped, it includes a new 8-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and a premium Bowers & Wilkins audio system.  

Owning a McLaren is not like owning any high-end car. It offers a niche lineup catering to select few supercar buyers who are aware of the rich heritage these vehicles bring to the table. It may be noted that ownership costs are extremely high, with exorbitant spare parts prices and labour charges. Maintenance costs easily run into lakhs every year. 

Remember, like most exotic car marques, even McLaren India has a small service network. However, the high-profile clientele can safely expect a highly customer-friendly experience from the brand.

McLaren resale value depends on: Model condition, Mileage, Market demand and Service history. Limited availability helps maintain exclusivity. However, unless demand for a rare model shoots up, depreciation is high due to the eye-watering purchase price.

All in all, McLaren cars are not about logic. They are about precision, performance, and control. The McLaren Price in India is undeniably high. Maintenance is expensive. Practicality is limited. Yet, McLaren India continues to attract serious driving enthusiasts.
