Wagon cars in India
Wagon Cars - Smart Space Design
The wagon body style once had greater acceptance in the world. While it’s still popular in many markets, it has been overtaken by SUVs and crossovers in India. Buyers increasingly favoured ground clearance, road presence and a commanding seating position, and the wagons were forced out of the mainstream conversation.
A wagon has a lower centre of gravity and improved speed stability and a more planted driving experience than tall SUVs. The extended roof permits a large square boot without affecting the rear seat comfort. For long highway runs, luggage-laden travel, or buyers who enjoy driving involvement, a wagon still makes decent sense.
While the likes of Maruti Suzuki Baleno Altura and Skoda Octavia Combi gave the mass-market an experience of wagon cars, they were quickly discontinued due to low demand. Later, the positioning of wagon cars in India was restricted to premium lifestyle vehicles.
