Xiaomi Cars

A lot of people might not still associate Xiaomi with the automotive industry, but its global range of automobiles will certainly change that opinion. Originally famous for electronics like smartphones, smart TVs, wearables and home ecosystem products, Xiaomi entered the world of automobiles as recently as March 2024 with the SU7 electric supercar. Note that the company is not yet operational in India. Nevertheless, Xiaomi’s electric vehicle has sparked significant interest among Indian buyers due to the brand’s popularity and value-driven image. Remember, the brand showcased in the EV at an event in Bengaluru back in 2024.

Xiaomi Cars - Driving the Future

We know that modern electric vehicles constitute a major electronics portion in its construction. Hence, technology and electrical architectures are what drive new-age cars. Leveraging its strength and dominance in these sectors, Xiaomi decided to enter the automotive space. In essence, the Chinese electronics giant considers its cars as “small devices on wheels”.

The SU7 electric sedan was the first EV from Xiaomi globally. It is designed to integrate seamlessly with Xiaomi’s HyperOS ecosystem. This means the vehicle can interact with smartphones, smart homes and wearable devices. The goal is to make the driving experience an extension of a user’s digital life rather than a standalone product. This approach is bound to attract tech-savvy young customers.

Xiaomi Car Current Status in India

Since Xiaomi has not officially initiated selling cars in India, there are no details regarding the Xiaomi car price in India.

Xiaomi Car Price Global Positioning

The Xiaomi SU7 electric sedan is on sale in China at a starting price of 215,900 Yuan (approx. $30,000 USD). This roughly translates to Rs 28 lakh. Evidently, the SU7 is positioned as a performance-oriented premium electric sedan that undercuts many established EV brands on pricing.

However, it is important to mention that Xiaomi car price cannot be translated to India, as taxes, duties and regulations would significantly alter the final cost. Still, the brand’s approach to offer value-for-money propositions continues from electronics to EVs.

There is only a single model on sale from Xiaomi, the SU7. However, it comes in three trims - Standard, Pro and Max.

Xiaomi SU7

  • Body Type: Electric Sedan
  • Powertrain: Fully Electric
  • Drivetrain: Triple Motor AWD (most powerful version)
  • Power: 1,548 PS (maximum)
  • Torque: 1,770 Nm (maximum)
  • Battery: 101 kWh
  • Acceleration (0-100 km/h): 1.98 seconds (with launch control)

It remains to be seen whether the Chinese electronics giant expands its portfolio with other body types as well.

Since the Xiaomi SU7 is among the fastest production cars on the planet, aerodynamics and weight are the two most crucial aspects. The exterior styling is clean, voluptuous and tech-driven. The front fascia features sleek LED headlamps with a sharp lighting signature, a smooth bonnet and an aerodynamic bumper design.

From the side, the elegant 21-inch alloy wheels, the low-slung profile, frameless doors and flush door handles enhance efficiency and visual appeal. Completing the exterior profile is the slightly subtle tail end with connected LED taillamps, dual- diffuser on the sporty bumper. All in all, the supercar definitely looks appealing and aerodynamically optimizes.

Some of the key exterior highlights include: Aerodynamic sedan silhouette, Frameless doors, Flush door handles, Full-width LED rear light bar and 21-inch Sporty alloy wheel designs

The interior cabin of the Xiaomi SU7 confirms its electronics DNA and heritage. The dashboard layout is dominated by a large central touchscreen running Xiaomi HyperOS. It captures all major in-cabin functions. The system allows seamless interaction with Xiaomi smartphones, smart home devices and wearables. As a result, the physical buttons are minimal, keeping the cabin uncluttered.

Being a flagship automobile, the material quality is premium, with soft-touch surfaces, leather upholstery and brushed metal accents. Xiaomi has focused heavily on ergonomics, ensuring all major controls are easily accessible.

The major in-cabin highlights are: Large central touchscreen with HyperOS, Fully digital driver display, Premium leather seats, Multi-zone climate controls and Wireless charging pads

Despite the fact that the Xiaomi SU7 is a performance monster, the seating configuration is practical and comfortable. The front seats are sporty yet well-cushioned, providing support during spirited driving as well as long journeys.

Additionally, the rear passengers cherish the generous legroom, a flat floor and well-contoured seatbacks. For an electric sedan, the boot space is decent. That makes it possible for owners to use it on an everyday basis.

Since Xiaomi has decided to challenge the likes of the Porsche cars, it is understood that the powertrain enables exhilarating driving dynamics. We have already discussed the power, torque and acceleration numbers. These figures place the SU7 among the quickest electric sedans globally. Note that the lower variants offer more balanced performance focused on efficiency rather than outright speed.

The Xiaomi SU7 is a performance maniac. Still, the company has managed to strike a decent balance between acceleration and ride comfort. The suspension setup is designed to remain compliant in city conditions while offering high-speed stability on highways.

What really helps is the responsive steering, which is sharp. Furthermore, the low centre of gravity from the battery placement enhances handling tremendously. Since the drivers reach extremely high speeds, the cabin insulation to prevent road and tyre noise is quite impressive.

Being a tech company first, Xiaomi has poured its entire experience and expertise into the SU7. The electric sedan runs Xiaomi HyperOS, allowing integration with:

  • Smartphones
  • Smart TVs
  • Home automation systems

The car can control smart home appliances, sync navigation with phones and offer real-time software updates. This ecosystem approach differentiates Xiaomi cars from traditional automakers.

The Xiaomi SU7 gets equipped with advanced driver assistance systems, including:

  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Lane keeping assistance with Surround-view camera system
  • Automated emergency braking
  •

Safety systems are software-driven and designed to improve through over-the-air updates.

In global markets, Xiaomi cars will likely compete with - Porsche Taycan, BMW i4, Tesla Model 3, BYD Seal and Hyundai Ioniq 6. In India, these comparisons remain theoretical until an official launch.

Regardless of the massive appeal of the Xiaomi SU7, there are some concrete strengths and weakness:

ProsCons
Cutting-edge technology integrationNot available in India
Extremely strong performance figuresNo confirmed India launch timeline
Aggressive global pricingLimited model lineup currently
Software-driven ownership experience

While the Xiaomi SU7 is not currently on sale in India, the possibility of it arriving at a later stage can’t be ruled out. We already have the Chinese BYD doing pretty well on the sales charts with its value-for-money EVs. Hence, there is no reason to believe that Xiaomi can’t replicate that phenomenon with the SU7.

Having said that, BYD has a rich heritage and automotive pedigree under its belt. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said about Xiaomi. Regardless of how successful it has been in the electronics industry, it won’t be easy to entice those buyers who are in the market to own performance cars from the German and Italian carmakers.
