If you are interested in driving in the country, you are required to hold a valid driving licence. However, before you can acquire a driving licence, you must first apply for a learners licence. You can only apply for a driving licence while the learners licence is valid. If the validity date for the learners licence is close to expiring, you can renew your learners licence. This process can be done online as well as offline.
Every state in India has its own procedure for leaners licence renewal and can be found online through their individual transport department websites. The general process for renewing a learner’s licence online in India can be found below:

Renewing your learner’s licence in India is relatively a simple procedure and can be done by anyone who is of legal age and has already applied for a learner’s licence. As mentioned earlier, the renewal process can be done online as well as offline. Online renewal for a learner’s licence can be done through the website of the RTO of every state. You can renew your learner’s licence online by filling up Form No. 2 and attaching the required documentation. You can also make the renewal fee payment for the learner’s licence online through the available portals. When you want to renew your learner’s licence offline, you will have to visit the RTO office in your state/city. Once you locate the RTO nearest to you, you will have to request for Form No. 2 and fill in the requested information such as name, address, DOB, and vehicle type, etc. Along with the form, you will have to make the fee payment of Rs. 200 at the payment counter of the RTO. Before submitting the form, you will also have to submit the original documents such as Aadhaar Card, Passport, Ration Card, Form 1 and Form 1A, PAN Card, and Passport Photographs.
In India, a learner’s licence is valid for a period of up to 6 months. During this time, learner’s licence holders can apply for a permanent driving licence. However, if the learner’s licence expires, you can either opt to apply for a fresh learner’s licence or renew your learner’s licence through the online or offline procedures.
The Motor Vehicles Act of 1988 made it mandatory for anyone who wishes to drive a vehicle in the country to hold a valid permanent driving licence. However, with further amendments to the Act, the Indian government now requires anyone wishing to drive a vehicle to first apply for and hold a learner’s licence. A learner’s licence gives beginners the authority to learn how to drive a vehicle under the supervision of a permanent driving licence holder. The learner’s licence in India is valid for a total of six (6) months. After this, the learner’s licence will be considered invalid and the holder will have to reapply for a new learner’s licence or renew their learner’s licence online or offline. If the learner’s licence is not renewed on time, it will be considered invalid and holders will not be allowed to learn how to drive. If you wish to continue learning how to drive in India, you will have to renew the learner licence as soon as the expiry date is reached.
Renewing your learner’s licence in India can be done either online or offline. If done online, the entire procedure takes place through the RTO website for an individual state. The Indian government also has their own website named the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways or Parivahan Sewa – https://parivahan.gov.in/, which has all the information you might need for learner’s licence applications and renewals. Through these websites, you can not only apply for learner’s licences, but you can also make the fee payments and submit the documents required for a successful application.
If you choose not to renew your learner’s licence online, you can always take the offline route. When renewing your learner’s licence offline, you can search for and find the nearest RTO office in your state or city. You can simply request for the renewal form from the RTO and correctly fill it in with the information requested for. Once the form is filled, you must attach the documents for submission. You are also required to make the fee payment at any of the available counters at the RTO. Once the forms are filled and the documents are attached, you can wait for the RTO to issue the renewed licence.
