BYD Seal - A Performance-Focused Electric Sedan for India
It easily disrupts the Indian market as a one-of-a-kind electric sports sedan in its price bracket. Available at a starting price of ₹41 lakh, the EV combines blistering performance with a high-tech, premium cabin. Also, it offers a great mix of "new-age" convenience features with a sophisticated design. Its competitive pricing and exciting performance make it a formidable contender to even costlier electric cars. As an all-rounded package, the BYD Seal certainly possesses the potential for giving the luxury carmakers a run for their money.
The Seal EV represents how well the Chinese engineers have designed the sedan, while ensuring immensely competitive pricing. That has been the major attraction of its products in all the markets BYD operates. As a result, it remains exciting to see what it comes up with next.
In India, the BYD Seal is available with two battery pack options and three variants. As a result, each avatar is tailored to different performance and range expectations. Buyers can choose between rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations, along with different battery capacities. Also, the EV supports DC fast charging up to 150 kW.
| Variant | Battery Capacity | Claimed Range (NEDC) | Ex-Showroom Price |
| Dynamic | 61.44 kWh | 510 km | ₹41.00 lakh |
| Premium | 82.56 kWh | 650 km | ₹45.70 lakh |
| Performance | 82.56 kWh | 580 km | ₹53.15 lakh |
The BYD Seal price in India puts it in the premium EV category. Having said that, it undercuts similarly sized luxury electric sedans while offering strong specifications. The availability of multiple battery options allows buyers to prioritise either affordability, maximum range or outright performance.
Considering the technology on offer, especially BYD’s Blade Battery, the pricing feels justified for buyers seeking a premium electric sedan experience without stepping into luxury-brand territory.
The BYD Seal uses BYD’s advanced electric drivetrain paired with its Blade Battery technology, which is known for thermal stability and longevity.
The Dynamic and Premium variants use a rear-mounted electric motor producing up to 313 PS and 360 Nm of torque. The Performance variant adds a second motor on the front axle, taking the combined output to 530 PS and 670 Nm of torque. Power is delivered via a single-speed automatic transmission.
City Driving Experience
In city conditions, the Seal feels refined and surprisingly easy to manage for its size. In fact, the throttle response is smooth in normal driving modes, making it comfortable in traffic. The low centre of gravity helps keep body movements well controlled, and the steering is light enough for urban manoeuvres.
Highway Driving Experience
On highways, the BYD Seal truly comes into its element. The Performance variant, in particular, offers strong acceleration (3.8 seconds) and effortless overtaking. Ride quality remains composed at high speeds, and the suspension strikes a good balance between sportiness and comfort. Despite its performance focus, the Seal remains stable and confidence-inspiring over long distances.
The BYD Seal is available in three trims to ensure that the needs of all sorts of buyers can be met.
Dynamic
The entry-level variant is best suited for buyers who want the Seal’s design and technology at a relatively lower price point. It focuses more on efficiency than outright performance.
Premium
Next up, we move on to the mid-level trim. This variant offers the longest driving range and adds more comfort and feature upgrades, making it the most balanced option for daily use and highway touring.
Performance
Finally, the top-spec Performance variant is aimed at enthusiasts. With dual motors and all-wheel drive, it delivers the most engaging driving experience and is ideal for buyers who want maximum power and acceleration.
BYD claims the following NEDC-certified range figures on a single charge:
- 61.44 kWh battery: up to 510 km
- 82.56 kWh battery (RWD): up to 650 km
- 82.56 kWh battery (AWD): up to 580 km
In real-world Indian conditions, owners can expect approximately 450-500 km from the Premium variant and slightly lower figures from the Performance variant. In essence, it all depends on driving style and usage. These numbers make the BYD Seal suitable for both daily commuting and long highway journeys.
The BYD Seal carries a modern “OCEAN X” design philosophy. The body is aerodynamically optimised for minimum drag resistance. At the front, the EV boasts sleek LED headlamps with LED DRLs, a sloping bonnet and a sporty bumper with aero housings on either side. Furthermore, the side section highlights the sloping roofline, 19-inch elegant alloy wheels and frameless doors.
Additionally, the wide stance and large tyres give the Seal a planted appearance. At the rear, connected LED tail lamps, a spoiler on the boot lid and subtle badging complete the modern look. Overall, the design prioritises aerodynamics and performance while still maintaining a premium visual identity.
The BYD Seal bears a premium cabin experience with all the latest bells and whistles.
Seating & Space
Despite being a sports car, the front seats are well bolstered and comfortable for long drives. Rear seat space is adequate for adults, though the low roofline slightly limits headroom compared to SUVs.
Practicality & Storage
The electric sports car offers a decent boot space of 400 litres, which is sufficient for most applications. Additional storage spaces are thoughtfully placed throughout the cabin.
Technology & Features
Technology is at the centre of the BYD Seal’s core DNA. Some of the top highlights include a 15.6-inch rotating digital infotainment display, 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, 8-way powered driver seat with 4-way powered lumbar support, 12-speaker DYNAUDIO premium audio system, ventilated and heated front seats, wireless smartphone connectivity, NFC key car, panoramic sunroof, PM2.5 and CN95 air filter, heads-up display, and dual-zone climate control. The cabin feels modern and well-equipped for its price point.
Safety remains a key aspect for most modern carmakers because the passengers have become immensely conscious about it. Here are the top active and passive equipment on offer with the Seal 9 airbags, Front and rear parking sensors, Hill hold control, Adaptive cruise control, Automatic emergency braking, Traffic sign recognition, Electronic stability control, Advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), 360-degree camera and ISOFIX child seat mount. The comprehensive safety suite adds to the Seal’s appeal as a premium family-friendly EV.
In India, the BYD Seal competes with:
- Volvo XC40 Recharge - The Volvo EV is ideal for those who want a unique luxury car with a key focus on active and passive safety
- Hyundai Ioniq 5 - The Ioniq 5 is an all-rounded package with focus on features, tech, safety and performance
- Kia EV6 - The EV6 is also a prominent vehicle at this price point with an attractive styling, feature-laden cabin and decent performance
The BYD Seal does a lot of things right, which makes it incredibly exciting for potential owners. Still, here are some pros and cons that one needs to watch out for.
| Pros | Cons |
| The performance is quite strong, especially in AWD variant | The ground clearance is low for rough Indian roads |
| The real-world driving range is impressive | The rear seat headroom is limited, which can be an issue for taller passengers |
| The interior feels premium and tech-savvy | The brand perception still evolving and will take some time to reach to the levels of the rivals |
| The Advanced Blade Battery technology is among the safest in the world | The top-spec variant might be too expensive for some |
The BYD Seal has its unique and distinct appeal. For buyers who want something other than the usual luxury car models, while still ensuring that they get to experience top-notch cabin amenities, the latest tech, eminent battery technology and stunning looks, the BYD Seal emerges as a great alternative.
