Overview

Ahmedabad is the capital city of Gujarat and home to a fast-growing economy. No wonder, then, that it’s also among the biggest used car markets as there are many who pick up a second-hand cars over new ones owing to their higher affordability and lower rate of depreciation. Also, many second-hand car buyers from adjoining small tows visit the city in search for good used car options. All this means that the market for used cars in Ahmedabad is much bigger than that for the new ones.

That said, it’s normal to see second-hand car buyers going to a middleman (or as many say, an agent) to easily get the vehicle ownership transferred in their name. However, one must note that it is not difficult to have the RC transferred in his or her name. To initiate the process of the ownership transfer, one needs to submit required documents to the local RTO within 30 days of buying an old car. Furthermore, in case the second-hand vehicle isn’t originally registered at a RTO in Gujarat, one needs to procure a NOC from the original RTO in different state before commencing the RC transfer process.

Once you have bought a pre-owned car, you need to initiate the RC transfer process at the local RTO within 30 days of purchase. The steps involved in the transfer of ownership are-

Step 1 – Procurement of No Objection Certificate (NOC) From The Traffic Department: (Required if seller and buyer of used car reside in different RTO area)

Thanks to the Gujarat’s proximity with Rajasthan and Maharashtra, it’s not uncommon to see people in Ahmedabad buying cars from these two neighbouring states. In such a scenario, the RC transfer process involves a few extra steps as in case the used car you’ve purchased isn’t registered in Gujarat, you need to first get the car de-registered from its original RTO. –

  • In case the car you’ve purchases is registered in Ahmedabad but not at your local RTO, you’ll need to procure a NOC from original RTO by submitting a duly-filled Form 28.
  • In case the used car is not registered in any of the RTOs of Ahmedabad, you will have to get a Form 29 from the original RTO.
