Aston Martin DBX - The Super-SUV with a Soul

For almost a century, an Aston Martin was synonymous with low-slung coupes, symbolising James Bond's preferred mode of transport. The launch of the Aston Martin DBX, however, changed this image of the brand, as it finally entered the luxury SUV market to safeguard its financial future.

Some competitors re-bodied existing platforms to keep selling their vehicles. Aston Martin did the opposite; it built a bespoke bonded aluminium platform for the DBX, while keeping the same agility the brand is famous for. The result was the introduction of a vehicle that looked like a raised sports car rather than a boxy truck.

Today, the Aston Martin DBX offers two models: the standard V8 for the "gentleman driver" desiring a comfortable touring experience, and the DBX 707 for those who want to chase supercars. With recent interior updates also fixing the issues of the older infotainment system, the DBX upgraded its digital characteristics to match its mechanical brilliance.

The Aston Martin DBX price is exclusive, reflecting across its two current models available in the Indian market.

VariantEngine / TransmissionMileage (ARAI)Ex-Showroom Price

DBX 707 (top)4.0L Twin-Turbo V8 AT, 697 bhp, 900 Nm10.1 kmpl₹4.38 Crore

A 4.0-litre Twin-Turbo V8 engine runs both the Aston Martin DBX and its more powerful variant. This engine is generally sourced from AMG, but Aston Martin's engineers tune it to provide a different experience.

4.0-litre V8 (Standard)

This engine produces 542 bhp and 700 Nm of torque. It is paired with a 9-speed automatic gearbox that allows for smooth city driving and delivers higher power on open stretches.

The engine's nature allows the DBX to withstand the city's imperfect roads, and the driving visibility is marginally better compared to other sports cars. The throttle response is instant; one push, and it surges forward with a growl that is unmistakably Aston.

4.0-litre V8 (DBX 707)

A higher variant of the traditional V8, this one has upgraded turbochargers. It is tuned to achieve a massive 697 bhp and 900 Nm of torque. This makes the DBX 707 not a city tourer, but a track weapon.

A wet-clutch transmission has been provided for faster shifts to launch the car from 0 to 100 km/h within 3.3 seconds, while the carbon ceramic brakes (standard on 707) provide immense braking power. This engine makes the DBX 707 one of the best-handling SUVs in the world, with a front-end turn-in that easily ignores its 2.2-tonne weight.

Two variants are available from the Aston Martin DBX, split by performance needs rather than trim levels.

DBX Twin Turbo

The DBX Twin Turbo is the standard model, suitable for grand touring.

It features a slightly more understated grille, lower bumpers, and a suspension setup that delivers higher driving comfort. If buyers want to settle for a less aggressive car without giving up on the Aston Martin badge, this is the logical option.

DBX 707

The flagship car from Aston Martin has a significantly larger front grille, a rear diffuser, and an industry-leading quad-exhaust system.

On the mechanical side, it is equipped with carbon ceramic brakes, a wet-clutch gearbox, and a recalibrated chassis. Ultimately, the DBX 707 is a car that allows its owner to claim having one of the world's most powerful SUVs.

While fuel efficiency is not prioritised in this segment, the Aston Martin DBX still offers respectable mileage figures.

  • Both the standard V8 model and the DBX 707 offer an ARAI-claimed mileage of 10.1 kmpl.

  • In the real world, owners have reported single-digit figures. City driving returns 4-5 kmpl, while the highways push that number to 7-8 kmpl.

One interesting point to note is that the brand's cylinder deactivation technology saves fuel when cruising. But the exhaust note has a sound that will still compel you to push your Aston Martin DBX as fast as you can without thinking about mileage figures.

The Aston Martin DBX has a design that can be rightly called its strongest USP. Beauty is its strong suit, while its rivals, the Urus and the Bentayga, rely on sharp angles and sheer mass, respectively. The signature "DB" grill dominates the car's front end, flanked by oval LED headlamps. The side profile is squeaky clean, with flush door handles and a roofline that falls elegantly as it reaches the car's rear.

And the rear; it's the most dramatic angle, featuring a ducktail spoiler, and a full-width LED light strip inspired by the Vantage model. The "Swan Wing" doors open upward, adding a touch of theatrics while avoiding high curbs.

The DBX 707 takes it a step further with larger air intakes, a massive rear diffuser, and 23-inch alloy wheels.

The interior of a DBX is something similar to a high-end leather boutique. Draped in aromatic Bridge of Weir leather, the cabin feels like a premium space with extensive customisation options for the stitching and veneers. The driving position is aggressive, offering a lower height than a traditional SUV, but still taller than a sedan. The rear seat space is also adequate, allotting enough legroom space for two tall adults, thereby making the car a family-oriented vehicle.

Technologically, all Aston Martin models were criticised for their old non-touch systems, but that has changed with the new variants. The latest iteration, especially the DBX 707, has a modern touchscreen interface and a fully digital driver's display. For gear selection, the centre console has glass buttons, and now, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto have been added for modern convenience. Finally, the rooftop is entirely panoramic glass, which floods the cabin with outer light and makes the car feel more spacious.

Even though the Aston Martin DBX is a performance car, it does not consider safety an afterthought. It is built on an aluminium frame that provides excellent protection against crashes, and the standard safety features of this car include 10 airbags. The ADAS suite is equipped with adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic detection. Meanwhile, the 360-degree camera system is highly useful for parking the vehicle in tight city spots.

The Aston Martin DBX is no pushover. It competes with the world's finest SUVs.

Lamborghini Urus: One of them is the Lamborghini Urus, a sharper, louder, and more stylish car. If you want attention, the Urus is the real deal, and if you want elegance and a better steering feel, the DBX wins.

Bentley Bentayga: Second in line is the Bentley Bentayga, an offering that delivers supreme luxury and comfort. It is softer and quieter, which makes it less engaging compared to the DBX.

Ferrari Purosangue

And finally, the Purosangue from Ferrari is a more expensive alternative, featuring a V12 engine. Technically, it's not an SUV but a raised supercar. The DBX offers more practical boot space and rear seating, being an SUV instead.

Like every other vehicle, the Aston Martin DBX has its own set of advantages and disadvantages, as listed in the table below:

ProsCons
A stunning and attractive exterior design that shows British excellence. The resale value might take a hit as finding a buyer can be a tough task.
It has engaging driving dynamics that make driving fun.It consumes too much fuel and the mileage is barely around 5 kmpl.
It has a luxurious leather cabin, which stands out from many competitors. The touchscreen tech has arrived too late and it still feels far behind Mercedes and other comps.
It has sufficient ground clearance to tackle Indian roads without any fuss.A very narrow service network in India makes ownership challenging and repairs time consuming.

If you don't want a car that is too loud, like the Lamborghini Urus, or too soft, like the Bentley Bentayga, there is no better option than the Aston Martin DBX. It offers a perfect balance between a sports car and a family tourer, and the DBX 707, in particular, defies the laws of physics with its acceleration and grip.

A Range Rover might be more comfortable. A Urus might be more flamboyant. However, if you value designing heritage, tactile luxury, and a driving experience meant to make you enjoy the road ahead, splashing on the Aston Martin DBX price might be a worthy investment. It is a beautiful, fast, and practical super-SUV bearing the Aston Martin wings and marching forward on that legacy.
