Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara: Efficient, Comfortable and Easy to Live With

The Grand Vitara has a lot going for it as a family SUV, especially if fuel efficiency is high on your list. The strong-hybrid version claims up to 27.97 kmpl, while the S-CNG variant is designed to keep everyday running costs low. The SUV also gets six airbags as standard, along with ESP, Hill Hold Assist and all-four disc brakes across the range.

Its strongest differentiator is the choice of a self-charging hybrid system. The 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine works with an electric motor and battery, allowing the SUV to run on electric power at low speeds and in light traffic. For buyers who do not want to commit to a full EV, this offers a useful middle ground.

The Grand Vitara is also easy to drive in the city, with light steering and a comfortable suspension setup. Higher variants bring features such as a panoramic sunroof, ventilated front seats, a 360-degree camera and connected-car technology. There is even an ALLGRIP AWD version for buyers who regularly head towards hilly or rougher terrain.

Inside, the cabin gets a layered dashboard, faux-leather upholstery and a choice of black-and-burgundy or all-black themes depending on the variant. Overall, the Grand Vitara is more about making everyday driving easy and economical than chasing outright performance.

The Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara starts at ₹10.76 lakh and stretches up to ₹19.77 lakh (ex-showroom). The petrol range is spread across Sigma, Delta, Zeta and Alpha trims, while the strong-hybrid models use Delta+, Zeta+ and Alpha+ badges. Select variants are also available with '(O)' packages that add extra comfort and convenience features.

Note: The Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara variants listed above are not exhaustive. Prices are ex-showroom, and the final on-road price will be higher after registration, insurance and other charges.

The Grand Vitara gives buyers three distinct ways to power the SUV. There is the regular 1.5-litre Smart Hybrid petrol engine, a factory-fitted S-CNG version and a more advanced 1.5-litre Intelligent Strong Hybrid. Depending on the variant, you can choose between a 5-speed manual, 6-speed torque-converter automatic or e-CVT.

1.5L Intelligent Strong Hybrid

The strong-hybrid version is the most interesting powertrain in the Grand Vitara lineup. It combines a 1.5-litre three-cylinder Atkinson-cycle petrol engine with an electric motor and a 177.6V lithium-ion battery. The combined system produces 114 bhp and uses an e-CVT automatic.

In slow-moving traffic and during gentle acceleration, the SUV can run on electric power alone. As the speed or power demand increases, the petrol engine joins in or charges the battery. The system handles the transition between EV, hybrid and engine-driven operation automatically, so there is no need for the driver to manage it.

1.5L Smart Hybrid Petrol & S-CNG

The regular petrol version uses a 1.5-litre four-cylinder K15C engine developing 102 bhp and 136.8 Nm. Its Integrated Starter Generator assists with start-stop operation, regenerative braking and initial acceleration. The power delivery is predictable and smooth, which suits relaxed daily driving.

The S-CNG version uses the same basic engine but produces 87 bhp and 121.5 Nm in CNG mode. It comes only with a 5-speed manual and is aimed mainly at buyers who want to keep fuel expenses under control.

City Ride

The Grand Vitara feels quite approachable in urban traffic. Its steering remains light at low speeds, while the manageable dimensions and tight turning radius make parking and U-turns relatively easy.

The strong hybrid has an added advantage here. It can move away in EV mode during low-speed driving, keeping the cabin quiet and reducing engine vibration. The petrol manual has a light clutch, while the 6-speed automatic offers smooth shifts without feeling complicated.

Highway Ride

At highway speeds, the Grand Vitara maintains a comfortable and composed character. Its suspension does a good job of taking the edge off potholes and uneven surfaces, while the SUV feels stable around 90-100 kmph.

The strong hybrid can also use its electric motor for quick bursts of torque during overtaking. On the petrol automatic, steering-mounted paddle shifters give the driver more control when an extra downshift is needed.

For buyers who regularly travel through snow, mud or uneven mountain roads, the ALLGRIP AWD version is the more capable choice. It gets Auto, Sport, Snow and Lock modes and can send power to the rear wheels when the front wheels lose traction.

Which Powertrain Should You Choose?

  • 1.5L Petrol Manual: Best suited to buyers looking for a straightforward petrol SUV with manageable running and ownership costs.
  • 1.5L Petrol Automatic: A better fit for frequent city driving where two-pedal convenience matters more.
  • 1.5L S-CNG: The sensible option for buyers covering high monthly distances and prioritising lower running costs.
  • 1.5L Strong Hybrid: The pick for maximum fuel efficiency and quieter EV-assisted city driving.
  • 1.5L ALLGRIP AWD: Worth considering if regular road trips involve hills, rough surfaces or slippery conditions.

The Grand Vitara's variant structure is fairly straightforward, with the regular petrol/CNG range separated from the stronger-equipped strong-hybrid versions.

Sigma

Sigma is the starting point into the Grand Vitara range, but it does not feel stripped down on the safety front. It gets six airbags, ESP with Hill Hold Assist, all-four disc brakes, rear parking sensors and ISOFIX mounts. The exterior uses halogen projector headlamps, 17-inch steel wheels with covers, LED DRLs and a roof-end spoiler. Inside, you get keyless entry, push-button start/stop, automatic climate control, rear AC vents, a 4.2-inch colour TFT MID and four power windows.

Delta & Delta CNG

Delta adds some useful everyday equipment, including body-coloured mirrors and door handles, a 7.0-inch SmartPlay Pro touchscreen, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, Suzuki Connect and steering-mounted cruise control. A rear parking camera and front/rear USB charging ports are also added. This is where buyers can also step up to the 6-speed automatic or factory-fitted S-CNG powertrain.

Zeta, Zeta CNG & Zeta(O)

Zeta moves the Grand Vitara into a more premium space with full-LED projector headlamps, 17-inch painted alloys, chrome beltline trim and a rear wiper with washer. Inside, ventilated front seats, an auto-dimming IRVM, an air purifier with PM2.5 display and a 6-speaker audio system improve comfort.

Alpha, Alpha(O) & Alpha ALLGRIP

Alpha gets 17-inch machined dual-tone alloys, black roof rails, Bordeaux leatherette upholstery, an 8-way powered driver's seat and the larger 9.0-inch SmartPlay Pro+ touchscreen. A 360-degree camera is also added. The Alpha ALLGRIP takes this further with the intelligent AWD system and its selectable terrain modes, making it the variant to consider for buyers who need additional traction.

Delta+, Zeta+, Alpha+ & (O) Packages

The Strong Hybrid range starts with Delta+, which brings the self-charging hybrid system, e-CVT, EV mode selection and a fully digital 7-inch instrument cluster. Zeta+ and Alpha+ add the more premium features, including a panoramic sunroof, wireless charging, Head-Up Display, ventilated leatherette seats and dark chrome exterior details. The (O) versions further add an 8-way powered driver's seat and other interior upgrades.

Which Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara Variant Should You Buy?

  • Sigma MT: Makes sense if you want the Grand Vitara's basic package and safety equipment without pushing the budget too far.
  • Delta MT/AT: The balanced choice for most family buyers, with the touchscreen, cruise control and rear camera.
  • Zeta MT/AT: A strong middle-ground option if comfort features such as ventilated seats and LED lighting matter.
  • Alpha ALLGRIP: The one to pick if AWD capability is a major requirement.
  • Zeta+/Alpha+ Strong Hybrid: Best for buyers who spend a lot of time in traffic and want the highest fuel efficiency with a premium feature set.

Fuel economy is one of the Grand Vitara's biggest strengths, with a 45-litre fuel tank across the range. The claimed figures are particularly strong for the strong hybrid and S-CNG versions, although actual mileage will depend on traffic, driving style and air-conditioning use.

In city conditions, the petrol manual typically returns around 14-16 kmpl, while the automatic can deliver around 12-14 kmpl in heavier traffic. On the highway, the manual can manage around 18-20 kmpl at steady speeds, giving it a potential range of more than 800 km on a full tank.

The strong hybrid is more efficient in urban driving, where its ability to use EV mode frequently helps it return around 22-25 kmpl. On highways, expect roughly 20-23 kmpl. The S-CNG version can deliver around 20-22 km/kg in the city and 25-28 km/kg on the highway.

The Grand Vitara has a fairly upright SUV stance, with a raised bonnet, sharp body lines and a clean overall shape. It manages to look substantial without becoming overly bulky, while the higher variants add more premium exterior detailing.

Front Profile

The front gets a large hexagonal grille with a chrome upper bar and high-gloss black mesh. Strong-hybrid variants use darker chrome detailing, while the signature three-point NEXTre' LED DRLs sit above the main lighting units.

Sigma and Delta use halogen projector headlamps, whereas Zeta, Alpha and the strong-hybrid variants get Bi-Beam LED projector lamps.

Side Profile

A 2,600 mm wheelbase gives the Grand Vitara balanced proportions, while the gently tapering roofline creates a neat floating-roof effect. Sigma gets 17-inch steel wheels, while Delta and Delta+ move to painted alloys. Zeta, Alpha and higher hybrid versions use 17-inch machined dual-tone alloys.

Silver roof rails are used on the mid-level trims, with Alpha and Strong Hybrid variants getting black roof rails. Higher versions also feature the panoramic sunroof, while chrome detailing runs along the window beltline.

Rear Profile

The rear is defined by the connected LED light bar and three-element NEXTre' LED tail lamps. The Grand Vitara nameplate sits prominently across the tailgate below the Suzuki badge, while the reversing lights and turn indicators are placed lower down in separate housings.

The Grand Vitara's cabin is designed around five occupants, with a fairly straightforward layout and enough room for family use. Higher variants add softer materials, leatherette upholstery and several comfort-focused features.

Front Row

The front seats offer good support for longer drives, with Zeta, Alpha and Strong Hybrid variants adding perforated leatherette upholstery and ventilation. Alpha and (O) versions also get an 8-way electrically adjustable driver's seat.

Second Row

The rear bench has enough room for two adults and a third passenger, with useful knee and foot room from the 2,600 mm wheelbase. The seatback gets a two-step recline, while rear passengers have access to dedicated AC vents, Type-A and Type-C USB ports and a fold-down centre armrest with cup holders.

Tech and Usability

The dashboard follows a layered horizontal design with faux-leather inserts and metallic accents. Depending on the trim, the infotainment screen measures 7.0 or 9.0 inches, with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, voice commands and Suzuki Connect.

Higher variants get a 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster that displays the hybrid system's energy flow. Other useful features include wireless phone charging, an air purifier with PM2.5 display, an auto-dimming IRVM and connected-car functions such as remote cabin pre-cooling, geofencing and live vehicle tracking.

Boot Space, Storage & Practicality

The regular Smart Hybrid petrol versions offer 373 litres of boot space, which is enough for everyday family luggage. Strong Hybrid models have a smaller 265-litre boot because the 177.6V battery pack sits below the floor.

The rear seats split 60:40, allowing you to free up more room when carrying larger items. There are also several smaller storage areas around the cabin, including a sliding centre armrest box, door bottle holders, a cooled glovebox, a coin tray and seatback pockets.

Safety equipment is one of the Grand Vitara's stronger points, with six airbags and several electronic safety systems available across the range. However, the SUV does not currently have a Bharat NCAP crash-test rating.

Passive Safety

Six airbags are standard, covering the front occupants with dual front and side airbags, along with full-length curtain airbags. All five seats get three-point ELR seatbelts with reminders, while the front belts feature pre-tensioners and force limiters.

ISOFIX mounts with top tethers are provided for the outer rear seats. The Global C platform also uses high-tensile steel reinforcements designed to manage impact forces around the passenger compartment.

Active Safety

The Grand Vitara gets all-four disc brakes, ABS with EBD, ESP and Hill Hold Assist across the range. Hill Descent Control is available with the ALLGRIP AWD setup, while TPMS is added from the Delta trim onwards.

Rear parking sensors are standard, with the higher Alpha and Alpha+ variants adding a 360-degree surround-view camera for easier parking and tighter manoeuvres.

Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara Safety Features: Variant-Wise

Each step up the range mainly adds parking assistance and monitoring features to the core safety package.

VariantWhat It Adds
SigmaCore package with 6 airbags, ESP, Hill Hold Assist, all-four disc brakes, ISOFIX and rear parking sensors
Delta / Delta+Adds TPMS and rear parking camera
Zeta / Zeta+Retains the Delta safety package
Alpha / Alpha+ / ALLGRIPAdds a 360-degree surround-view camera; ALLGRIP also gets Hill Descent Control

The Grand Vitara sits in a crowded mid-size SUV segment, with the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder and Tata Curvv all offering different takes on the formula. The Grand Vitara's strongest cards are its strong-hybrid powertrain, factory CNG option and availability of ALLGRIP AWD.

Kia Seltos₹10.91-21.57 lakhSporty styling, premium cabin and broad powertrain range

Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara vs Tata Curvv

The Tata Curvv stands out with its coupe-SUV styling, 500-litre boot and safety-focused package, along with turbo-petrol and diesel engine choices.

The Grand Vitara takes a more practical route with petrol, CNG and strong-hybrid options, plus ALLGRIP AWD on select variants and up to 27.97 kmpl claimed efficiency.

Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara vs Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder

The Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder shares its platform and strong-hybrid technology with the Grand Vitara, while adding Toyota’s styling and ownership package.

The Grand Vitara offers a similar hybrid setup with a wider Maruti-focused variant range, along with CNG and ALLGRIP AWD options.

Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara vs Hyundai Creta

The Hyundai Creta is aimed more at buyers who want stronger performance and features, with turbo-petrol, diesel and Level 2 ADAS options on higher variants.

The Grand Vitara focuses more on fuel economy and everyday comfort, with its strong hybrid returning up to 27.97 kmpl and six airbags offered as standard.

Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara vs Kia Seltos

The Kia Seltos appeals to buyers looking for sporty styling, a premium cabin and a broad choice of performance-oriented powertrains.

The Grand Vitara is better suited to efficiency-focused buyers, offering strong-hybrid and CNG options along with optional ALLGRIP AWD.

Which One Should You Pick?

  • Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara: Pick it for fuel efficiency, comfort, CNG availability and optional AWD.
  • Tata Curvv: A good choice if distinctive coupe-SUV styling and a large boot matter most.
  • Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder: Consider it if you want hybrid efficiency with Toyota's ownership package.
  • Hyundai Creta: Better suited to buyers looking for stronger engine options and Level 2 ADAS.
  • Kia Seltos: Makes sense if sporty styling, features and a performance-focused range are priorities.

The Grand Vitara gets several important things right, but there are a few areas where some rivals have a clear advantage.

ProsCons
Comfortable suspension setup makes the Grand Vitara easy to live with on broken Indian roadsNaturally aspirated petrol engine feels less energetic than turbo-petrol rivals
ALLGRIP AWD is available on select variants for better traction on slippery and uneven surfacesStrong Hybrid variants lose some boot space because of the battery placement
Six airbags and all-four disc brakes are standard across the rangeRear headroom is slightly tighter for taller passengers on panoramic sunroof variants
The Strong Hybrid combines strong city efficiency with a claimed 27.97 kmplSome interior switches and controls feel shared with lower-segment Maruti models

The Grand Vitara is not the quickest or most feature-loaded SUV in the segment, but its combination of efficiency, comfort, safety and powertrain choice makes it an easy SUV to recommend for practical family use.

The Grand Vitara makes the most sense when your priorities are comfort, efficiency and hassle-free everyday use rather than outright performance. There is enough choice in the range to suit different buyers, from the straightforward petrol manual to the low-running-cost S-CNG and the much more efficient strong hybrid.

For city-heavy usage, the Strong Hybrid is the standout. Its ability to run on electric power at low speeds, combined with the e-CVT and real-world city efficiency of around 22-25 kmpl, makes it particularly well suited to stop-and-go traffic. On the other hand, buyers who regularly travel through hills or rougher roads have the option of the Alpha ALLGRIP AWD.

There are also strong alternatives depending on what you value. The Kia Seltos makes more sense for buyers chasing a sportier character, while the Hyundai Creta is the better fit if Level 2 ADAS and stronger engine options are important. The Tata Curvv offers a more distinctive shape and larger boot, while the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder is the closest alternative to the Grand Vitara's hybrid proposition.

For someone who simply wants a comfortable five-seat SUV with good mileage, plenty of choice and Maruti's broad NEXA service reach, the Grand Vitara remains a well-rounded option. Its biggest appeal is that it does not force you into one type of ownership: you can choose petrol, CNG, hybrid or even AWD depending on how you use your SUV.

The Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara impresses with its strong hybrid drivetrain, offering exceptional fuel economy and a variety of features. Its design combines rugged SUV aesthetics with modern technology, including a spacious infotainment system and safety features. However, some drawbacks include a narrow cabin that can feel cramped for rear passengers and a lack of spirited engine options compared to competitors. Additionally, the AWD system is limited to the mild hybrid variant, restricting versatility.

The Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara for its perfect blend of practicality, fun, and the reliability of Maruti's vast service network. Priced from ₹10.7 lakh, this 2025-updated SUV suits my daily commutes and weekend trips. Its strong hybrid engine (1.5L petrol + electric) gives me 18-20 kmpl, saving fuel while packing eNough punch (115 PS) for smooth highway drives. I test-drove the Zeta trim recently, and the 6-speed automatic with crisp handling made navigating busy roads a joy. The 10.25-inch touchscreen and paNoramic sunroof add a premium vibe without a crazy price tag. What sets it apart is Maruti's service support. With 4,000+ centers nationwide, low maintenance costs, which is a big win. Unlike the Jimny, which I tried but found too bouncy for daily use, the Grand Vitara's comfy ride and roomy cabin fit my family perfectly.

YES! Its been an year since I've bought my Grand Vitara Zeta Variant. Yes the suzuki Engine is refined and very very smooth. The mileage is also very good for the size of the car and it's performance! I love the interior. It doesn't feel cheap!! The exterior look of the car is badass!🔥 I got the grey colour! Bro it's an attention magnet!! The colour is very special. It's light grey in day time and in night time or darkness it turns batman mode! It goes black 🌚! The looks are very good. The car looks HUGE from the outside! The ground clearance doesn't disappoint you at all. And features wise the car DOESN'T LACK ANY FEATURES FOR THE PRICE!. The display given in the car is awesome and it is very very useful. The speakers are VERY GOOD! rich audio. Damn good bass and ITS ADJUSTABLE!!!!. And the BEST PART! the app connectivity!! THE APP CONNECTION FEATURES ARE SOO GOOD. EVEN 50L cars don't have it!! Soooo many security features. Tracking, wallet parking mode, stolen alert mode, intrusion alert, unlocking using phone, hazard light toggle in app, EVEN CHECKING BATTERY CAPACITY AND HEALTH WITHOUT TOUCHING THE CAR!!!. time to time service updates. Driving route map! Even says where you've accelerated quickly and where you've applied harsh brakes!!!! The mileage also is updated in the cars display and the app. Overall the Suzuki Grand Vitara DOESN'T disappoint you in any way considering the price is between 15L to 21L. The car does everything!!! Highway crusing, adventure, anything!!! The suspension is damn soft and good!!! AND ALSO COMES WITH CRUISE CONTROL!!!!

Among all the cars currently on sale in India, my favourite is the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara - particularly the Strong Hybrid variant. In a market dominated by feature-heavy but often forgettable SUVs, the Grand Vitara stands out as a smart, well-balanced package that brings practicality, innovation, and long-term value together in a compelling way. What I appreciate most is its intelligent hybrid powertrain a collaboration with Toyota which offers excellent fuel efficiency without compromising too much on drivability. For urban users like myself who navigate both city traffic and weekend highway runs, the silent EV-only mode in stop-go traffic and the seamless switch to petrol power make for a very refined and eco-friendly experience. It's a great example of how mainstream Indian cars are finally adopting sustainable technologies without pricing themselves out of reach. The all-wheel-drive (AWD) option in the mild hybrid variant is another underrated strength. While it's not a full-blown off-roader, it brings a sense of confidence and go-anywhere ability that many soft-roaders in its segment lack. For someone who enjoys road trips, it is a really best car.
