Mini Cooper Countryman EV - Heritage Meets Electric Future

The original Mini Countryman was the brand’s answer to those wanting a classic hatchback but with more space and practicality for their families. It successfully met those demands by presenting itself as both a spirited commuter and a versatile crossover due to its transverse engine layout and a wheel-at-each-corner design. Over the years, Mini’s offering became a premium lifestyle vehicle that valued individuality, go-kart handling, and a design distinct from conventional boxy SUV proportions.

Today, as the automobile industry is shifting to electrification, the Mini Cooper Countryman EV is the brand’s most significant identity in this sector. The traditional combustion engine has been abandoned; there is now a highly efficient 66.45 kWh electric powertrain running the car, all while retaining its core versatility. This current Countryman EV available in the Indian market is the go-to choice for eco-conscious luxury buyers who do not want to compromise on either driving thrills or premium cabin features.

The Mini Cooper Countryman EV currently has four variants available in retail, with each targeting specific buyer preferences.

Car/Model/VariantEngine/Transmission/OutputMileage (ARAI)Ex-Showroom Price
Countryman Electric E66.45 kWh/1-Speed AT/313 bhp, 494 Nm462 km₹54.90 Lakh
Countryman Electric Favoured Pack66.45 kWh/1-Speed AT/313 bhp, 494 Nm462 km₹59.95 Lakh
Countryman Electric JCW66.45 kWh/1-Speed AT/313 bhp, 494 Nm462 km₹62.00 Lakh
Countryman Electric SE All466.45 kWh/1-Speed AT/313 bhp, 494 Nm440 km₹66.90 Lakh

The Mini Cooper Countryman EV has the same 66.45 kWh lithium-ion battery pack across all models, but tuned for different power deliveries. The base E, Favoured Pack, and JCW consist of a single electric motor on the front axle that delivers 201 bhp and 250 Nm of torque. Meanwhile, the SE All4 gets a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup. It produces 313 bhp and 494 Nm of torque, allowing the car to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.6 seconds.

Many premium features are in the base E trim, such as automatic climate control, electrically adjustable front seats, and Mini’s signature circular OLED display. However, from the Favoured Pack, things get more exciting with a head-up display, enhanced ambient lighting, bespoke interior trims, etc. The JCW (John Cooper Works) trim provides sportier seating surfaces, and the top-spec SE All4 offers advanced connected-car tech and maximum ADAS functionalities.

The Mini Cooper Countryman EV has four variants for the Indian market. While the first three models are the same in engine and output, the most expensive variant offers better performance on long-distance travel.

  • E (Base): It features a 66.45 kWh battery with a range of 462 km.

  • Favoured Pack: It offers similar specs to the base variant, but with enhanced exterior styling.

  • JCW (John Cooper Works): This variant boasts sporty styling elements.

SE All4: The top-spec variant offers higher performance, but a lower range of 440 km. It is also around ₹10-12 lakh more expensive than the base E variant.

Since traditional mileage does not apply to an EV, the Mini Cooper Countryman EV’s efficiency is measured by its driving range instead. The single-motor E variants register 462 km on a single charge, but in real-world, city-driving conditions, owners can achieve numbers between 380 and 400 km. Driving range is further lower in the top-spec SE All4, with an ARAI-claimed range of 440 km, but this is expected since the variant sacrifices efficiency for power. As for charging capabilities, the car offers fast charging, allowing its battery to juice up from 10% to 80% in 30 minutes.

The Mini Cooper Countryman EV’s profile features a new, intricately detailed, octagonal front grille flanked by customisable LED headlights with unique DRL signatures. The side profile showcases 17 to 20-inch alloy wheel options, along with a slightly taller stance providing ground clearance of 165 to 202 mm. Meanwhile, the rear profile has seen the vehicle drop its traditional Union Jack motif in favour of redesigned pixelated LED taillights.

Simple yet charismatic in design, the Mini Cooper Countryman EV has abandoned its traditional instrument cluster in favour of a stunning 9.4-inch round OLED touchscreen. It handles infotainment, navigation, and driving telemetry via the Mini Operating System 9. Below the touchscreen is a physical toggle bar that retains the tactile feel for gear selection and experience modes. Most of the materials inside the cabin are made of vegan and recycled polyester knits to elevate the cabin’s luxury feel.

The Mini Cooper Countryman EV holds a 5-star Euro NCAP crash test rating. This exceptional structural integrity is complemented by six airbags, dynamic stability control, and an electronic parking brake. There are additional features, including a Level-2 Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS), which provides adaptive cruise control, steering assistance, lane-keeping assistance, and a 360-degree surround-view camera.

The three closest competitors around the Mini Cooper Countryman EV price bracket are the Volvo XC40 Recharge, BMW iX1, and Hyundai Ioniq 5.

Volvo XC40 Recharge

A unique Scandinavian design encompasses the Volvo, which also provides dual-motor acceleration. However, the Countryman EV is more engaging to ride because of its driver-focused chassis.

BMW iX1

The iX1 is traditional and conservative by design. The Mini, in comparison, does not hold back with its distinctive looks and a lower starting price.

Hyundai Ioniq 5

In terms of cabin space, the Ioniq 5 is a better choice. But, to relish the British badge value, the Cooper is superior.

There are a few trade-offs to consider while choosing the Mini Cooper Countryman EV.

ProsCons
Unique retro-modern exterior styling sets it apart from competitors. The car can feel stiff on broken Indian roads with its slightly firm suspension.
A circular OLED touchscreen has replaced the instrument cluster, which is a great addition. No instrument cluster leaves doubt for long-term reliability.
Strong real-world electric range of 462 km with fast-charging technology removes range anxiety.Rear seating space is average compared to its rivals in the segment.
Instant torque and agile handling for both city roads and highways.Top variants are quite expensive, particularly the SE All4 as they are all CBU.

The Mini Cooper Countryman EV is suitable for those who want an emission-free daily driver in India. It offers sharp driving dynamics, segment-leading interior tech, and a design distinct from its rivals. The Mini Cooper Countryman EV price is also well-justified when you consider its other features, such as bespoke cabin materials and the rapid 130 kW DC charging system. This car is both an emotional purchase and a practical urban companion for small families.

When compared to alternatives like the BMW iX1 or Volvo XC40 Recharge, the Countryman EV holds its ground with its driving personality, something that its rivals lack. While others focus on isolating the driver from the road, the Mini embraces the connection, making every commute an event. For those transitioning to electric mobility but unwilling to sacrifice character and fun, this British EV remains a top-tier choice.
