Outline

In order to expand its local manufacturing footprint, Tata Motors-owned luxury carmaker Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is set to commence assembly of its premium SUV models in Tamil Nadu from early 2026. Up until now, JLR’s local assembly operations were centralised in Pune, Maharashtra, which are now set to move to a new facility in Ranipet. Read on to know more about the Jaguar Land Rover India local assembly plans and future timelines.

New facility at Ranipet to produce Tata and JLR models

The upcoming facility in Ranipet is part of Tata Motors’ ambitious Rs 9,000 crore investment plan. Designed as a shared manufacturing hub, the plant will produce next-generation vehicles for both Tata Motors and Jaguar Land Rover.

The vehicles will be assembled from completely knocked down (CKD) kits, with initial production focusing on models like the Range Rover Evoque and the Range Rover Velar. The plant will commence operations in a phased manner and is expected to ramp up to a full capacity of over 250,000 units annually within the next five to seven years.

Gradual shift from Pune to Ranipet

JLR has been locally assembling its vehicles in India since 2011 at Tata’s facility in Pune. Currently, even flagship models such as the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport are assembled in Pune. However, the company has now confirmed that these operations will progressively shift to Ranipet. PB Balaji, Group Chief Financial Officer of Tata Motors, stated that the transition will take place in stages, aligning with the scale-up of the new facility.

Local assembly to bring price cuts

The localisation of JLR models has historically brought substantial price benefits for Indian customers. In previous instances, locally assembled versions of the Range Rover Velar and Evoque saw price reductions of up to 20–25%, thanks to savings on high import duties and taxes. More recently, Land Rover began the local assembly of its flagship Range Rover models and it resulted in price cuts north of Rs 50 lakh. These competitive pricing advantages have helped the brand broaden its appeal in the price-sensitive Indian luxury vehicle market. With the new Tamil Nadu facility coming online, similar benefits are expected for future models, further strengthening JLR’s market position.
