Outline

Skoda entered the affordable segment and the competitive sub-4-metre space with the Kylaq, a model meant to widen the brand’s reach. The launch delivered on that goal. It not only filled a key gap in Skoda’s lineup but also helped lift overall sales momentum. Recently, the carmaker expanded the range further by introducing two new trims.

Even before a week has passed since those updates, the Kylaq is back in the spotlight. This time, it’s not about variants or pricing, but fresh speculation around the Skoda Kylaq CNG launch.

Nothing has been officially announced or confirmed yet, but the chatter has picked up pace. Speaking to our sister publication Autocar Professional, Martin Jahn, board member for sales and marketing at Skoda Auto, openly acknowledged discussions around a Kylaq CNG, according to Autocar.

While the statement stops short of confirmation, it has clearly put the idea on the table and sparked renewed interest. So, while there’s no official word yet, the conversation around skoda kylaq CNG is very much alive. Let’s take a closer look at what’s being said, what it could mean, and how realistic this move might be going forward.

Skoda kylaq CNG India launch expected? — Statements suggest it’s on the cards

When Martin Jahn, board member for sales and marketing at Skoda Auto, said, “We are looking at all alternatives, and CNG I think is a possibility,” it was enough to spark serious speculation. Not because it was dramatic but because it fit into a pattern Skoda has already established.

This is also why the idea doesn’t feel shocking. Back in mid-June 2025, during media interactions around the Kylaq SUV’s market performance, Skoda’s brand director Ashish Gupta was asked directly about the possibility of a CNG option. His response was measured but telling. He said it was “definitely on the table but not at this stage.” He went on to explain, “CNG is an interesting proposition. What we are evaluating right now in terms of CNG is compatibility of our turbo engines with it.”

Taken together, these statements don’t sound like offhand remarks. They suggest that CNG has been under internal discussion for a while. Even if timelines remain undecided. The messaging has been cautious, consistent but deliberate, which makes the renewed talk around a CNG Kylaq feel more like a continuation than a surprise.

Skoda’s journey with CNG — From Citigo to Scala

Skoda has a long history of experimenting with CNG, with European markets often getting the first look. It also showed that Skoda’s TSI engine could run smoothly on CNG. The Skoda Citigo G-TEC, for example, was a factory-fitted bi-fuel city car running on petrol and CNG. It was available in Germany, Italy, Austria, and the Czech Republic from 2012 until production ended in December 2019.

The Octavia iCNG Combi came next, launching in the Czech Republic in 2014 before reaching more than ten other European countries. Another model, the Scala G-TEC, also brought CNG to European buyers.

If the Skoda Kylaq CNG were to enter the market, it would likely be offered exclusively with a 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine, producing 116PS of peak power and 178Nm of torque. Buyers could choose between a six-speed manual or a torque converter automatic gearbox.

The expected Kylaq CNG, on the other hand, might deliver slightly lower power and torque compared to the petrol version. It is also expected to come exclusively with a manual gearbox.
