Outline

As per a new market report, Tata Motors has acquired the licensing rights for the 2.0-litre diesel engine from Stellantis. This move gives Tata Motors the control over the future development and changes to the 2.0-litre diesel engine, which is currently offered in the Harrier and Safari. Read on to know more about the licensing rights and the changes it could bring to the products from the house of Tata.

Tata acquires licensing rights from Stellantis

As per the agreement between Tata Motors and the Stellantis group, the home-grown carmaker now boasts rights to develop the 2.0-litre diesel engine further and take control of its design changes and upgrades for the future. “Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles (TMPV) and Stellantis have entered into a License Technology Agreement in Q4 FY25 under which TMPV has acquired licence from Stellantis which grants rights to carry out certain developments and technical changes in the FAM B 2.0-litre diesel engine for its own requirements. The licence basically covers development / modifications of the engine to meet the various upcoming regulations, etc. The license also enables TMPV to initiate activities for performance enhancements of the said engine that will lead to overall improvements in the vehicle performance." said an official Tata Motors’ spokesperson.

What’s the benefit for Tata Motors?

Amid the decline of diesel engines, it may not come across as a wise move taking over rights to the 2.0-litre diesel engine. However, the gains could be immense, if Tata Motors decide to proceed with these options. To begin with, Tata Motors can now bring alterations to the power outputs of the diesel engine, which up until now, was only offered in a single state of 170PS tune. In the future, we could expect Tata Motors offering multiple states of power tunes for the diesel engine, much like what Mahindra does with its diesel engine.

Secondly, Tata Motors could bring further enhancements to the engine map, improving the power delivery and refinement, something which was earlier channeled through Stellantis along with huge costs for smallest of changes. The in-house development for Tata Motors will bring the development costs down by a considerable margin and also quicken up the entire process.

Tata Harrier, Safari petrol incoming?

Alongside this, Tata Motors is already readying the Harrier petrol and Safari petrol, both of which have been awaited for launch for a long time. Tata Motors first showcased its new range of turbo-petrol engines—the 1.2-litre and 1.5-litre—at the 2023 Auto Expo but since then, there has been no real update for the latter. We expect Tata Motors to finally launch the Harrier and Safari petrol towards the end of the year 2025.
