Expected Tesla Model Y price in India

When it comes to the Tesla Model Y price expectation in India, things aren’t exactly light on the wallet. According to Bloomberg, five Model Y units have already landed in Mumbai from Tesla’s Shanghai factory. Documents reviewed reveal these cars were declared at Rs 2.77 million (about $31,988). But that’s just the base cost. Add to that India’s hefty 70% import duty on fully built EVs under $40,000, plus surcharges, and the import duties alone cross Rs 2.1 million per unit.

For comparison, the Model Y retails at $37,490 in the US with tax credits and around $36,701 (263,500 yuan) in China. In India, early estimates suggest the price could cross $56,000—roughly Rs 48 lakh or even higher. These are the current estimates; the final price will be set by Tesla.

Besides the pricing challenge, Tesla faces tough competition. The Indian EV market is heating up with local players and global rivals like BYD already making waves. How well Tesla can carve a niche here, given the pricing and competition, remains to be seen.
