It’s been so long since a petrol version of the Tata Harrier-Safari duo is expected to be launched in the Indian market. Two test mules of the Tata Safari SUV have been spied testing — one camouflaged and the other one undisguised. We suspect that these mules might be equipped with the petrol engine that’s coming on the SUV, to rival other cars in its segment. The petrol motor in question is expected to be a 1.5-litre turbocharged-petrol unit, though there’s no confirmation from the brand regarding the same yet.

The Safari is currently available with a single diesel engine option in India, and is priced between Rs 15.49 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) and Rs 27.24 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). It is likely that the Tata Safari petrol variants will be priced at least a lakh rupees cheaper than the Tata Safari diesel variants.

2.0-litre diesel engine rights

In other news, Tata Motors recently acquired rights to further develop Fiat’s 2.0-litre Multijet II diesel engine from Stellantis. This is the same engine that does duty on the Harrier and Safari SUVs. We might also see a tweaked version of this engine on the SUVs in the near future.
