Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 50 becomes the fastest VW around the ‘ring

Celebrating 50 years of the Golf, Volkswagen has released the Golf GTI Edition 50 that has become the fastest Volkswagen to go around the Nurburgring. Despite being front wheel drive, the Golf GTI manages to lap the Nurburgring faster than the Golf R, which has all-wheel-drive. Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 50 lap record

The Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 50 lapped the Nurburging in 7 minutes and 46 seconds, making it the fastest Volkswagen model to go around the track. It is worth mentioning that the Golf GTI Edition 50 tested around the track was equipped with an optional Performance Pack, which includes a performance chassis and particularly lightweight 19-inch semi-slick Potenza Race tyres from Bridgestone, which have been specially developed for the car.

What’s important to note is that the Performance Package which enabled the GTI to become the fastest Volkswagen, will be offered to the customers of the Golf GTI Edition 50 as an optional package. Upon breaking his previous record, Benny Leuchter, Volkswagen’s test driver, said, “Three years ago, I wouldn’t have thought that I could ever beat the lap time of the outstanding Golf R with a front-wheel drive Golf GTI as clearly as I have now. The fact that this has now happened – in quite bad weather, by the way – actually says everything about the successful setup and extraordinary potential of this GTI”.

Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 50 market launch

Volkswagen will launch the Golf GTI Edition 50 in the year 2026, celebrating the iconic model’s 50 years of existence. While the launch of the Edition 50 is still some time away, Volkswagen will host an exclusive showcase of the Golf GTI Edition 50 on June 20 in advance of the 24-hour race at the Nurburgring.

Will the Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 50 come to India?

Volkswagen recently launched the Golf GTI in India at a price of Rs 53 lakh (ex-showroom). Volkswagen reveals that the first batch of the Golf GTI hot hatches—containing 150 units—have already been spoken for. To fulfil the growing demand, the carmaker has promised to bring additional 100 units of the Golf GTI towards the end of this year. However, the chances of the Golf GTI Edition 50 making to India are slim, owing to the limited availability of this model in the global market.
