Outline

Road tax in Uttarakhand is a mandatory payment for all vehicles registered in the state, or any other in India. No matter if you’ve just purchased a brand-new car, re-registered a second-hand car, or even brought in one from another state, paying road tax on it is non-negotiable. The road tax regime in Uttarakhand is governed by the Uttarakhand Motor Vehicles Taxation Act, and like any other state in India, it has its own system of calculation, slabs, and exemptions.

In this blog, we will go over how you can calculate the tax,  the current road tax rates on two-wheelers and four-wheelers in Uttarakhand, the penalties associated and how you can pay the tax online. Keep reading.

Who Needs to Pay Road Tax in Uttarakhand?

Whether you have a scooter, a hatchback, an SUV, or an EV, you will have to pay road tax in Uttarakhand in case you own or intend to use a motor vehicle in the state. Here’s who needs to pay:

  • Residents of Uttarakhand purchasing new vehicles
  • Non-residents who bring a vehicle into Uttarakhand and intend to use it for more than 12 months
  • Buyers of second-hand vehicles that were previously registered outside Uttarakhand

The tax must be paid to the Regional Transport Office (RTO) either as a one-time payment or, in some cases, through annual renewals depending on the vehicle type and category.

How is Road Tax Calculated in Uttarakhand?

Road tax in Uttarakhand is calculated based on several key factors that determine how much you owe at the time of registration:

  • Vehicle type (two-wheeler, four-wheeler, commercial, EV, etc.)
  • Fuel type (diesel, petrol, or electric)
  • Cost of the vehicle (ex-showroom price)
  • Purpose of use (personal or commercial)
  • Vehicle age (for used vehicle re-registration)

In the case of new vehicles, the tax is usually a percentage of the ex-showroom price, and in the case of vehicles shifted to the state, it is an amount calculated on the basis of the depreciated value of the vehicle.

Example: If you purchase a petrol car worth ₹8,00,000, and the tax rate applicable to it is 6%, then your road tax would be ₹48,000, which you would pay during registration.

EVs are fully exempt from road tax for five years as a policy incentive for green vehicles, which was extended through schemes backed by the Uttarakhand cabinet in 2025.

Important Note:

In Uttarakhand, private vehicles pay a one-time road tax, which is calculated as a percentage of the ex-showroom price. The upfront costs include 15 years and the annual expenditure on wear and tear. In case of registration of other states, the tax is calculated on depreciated value, where the depreciation is 7% per annum (max 21%).
