The Honda City, which remained the undisputed king of the C2 segment for many years, can now be seen having a tough time to fend off the heat from the Maruti Ciaz. Before the launch of the Ciaz in 2015, Maruti Suzuki, the country’s largest car manufacturer, failed to enjoy much success in the segment. Its earlier C2-segmenters, the Baleno and the Ciaz, weren’t anywhere as popular as the City. However, the Ciaz has not only managed to leave a sizeable dent in the sales of the City, it has also, on many occasions, sold more than the traditional bestseller. While City sold slightly more than the Ciaz in the calender year 2017, the Ciaz outclassed the City in FY 2018-19. So, which one of these should you buy? This is one area where the City enjoys an upper hand over the Ciaz. The Ciaz offers a 1.4-litre petrol engine that outputs 91 bhp and 130 Nm, and a 1.3-litre diesel engine outputs 89 bhp and 200 Nm. On the other hand, the City gets 1.5-litre petrol and diesel engines that offer much more power. The petrol engine offers 117 bhp while the diesel offers 99 bhp. The petrol City is clearly a better performer than the City petrol. The Diesel City is better at least on paper. In the real world, however, the Ciaz is more refined and almost as fast due to a better gearing. Still, the City is the winner of this part of our Honda City vs Maruti Ciaz comparison.
Of course, it is pretty tough to choose between the Maruti Ciaz and the Honda City. While the Ciaz offers a higher mileage and a more spacious interior at a lower price, the City impresses with its powerful petrol engine and a slightly more upmarket interior. While you really can’t go wrong with any of these, we think you should pick one up as per the exact requirements. Those seeking excellent value for money should simply head for the Ciaz. Also, those who plan to spend a lot of time in the back seat should pick up the Ciaz for the excellent rear seat comfort and space. The City is the one for you if you want a petrol car that is high on performance. If you compare diesel variants of Honda City and Ciaz, it’s the Ciaz you should go for. We say so as it offers a much higher mileage and similar performance. Also, it’s much cheaper than the City Diesel.
