Maruti Ignis vs Maruti Swift Comparison – Price, Features & Specifications

Maruti Ignis vs Maruti Swift Comparison

When it comes to the Indian automotive industry, best hatchbacks have a stranglehold on sales figures that sedans or SUVs just can’t keep up with. Maruti Suzuki is not only the go-to carmaker in India, but its lineup of cars usually features a few hatchbacks for the Indian buyer to choose from.

Two such hatchbacks are the Maruti Suzuki Ignis and the Swift, and while it may be easy to make an apples-to-apples comparison between the two, these siblings are about as similar as cats and dogs. With that being said, here is a detailed Maruti Ignis vs Maruti Swift comparison which will help you compare the two hatchbacks better.

Maruti Ignis and Maruti Swift: Price and Variant Levels

Maruti IgnisMaruti Swift
Starting Price (ex-showroom, Delhi)₹5.84 lakh₹5.99 lakh

The Maruti Suzuki Swift starts at an ex-showroom price of ₹5.99 lakhs, ₹15,000 dearer than the Ignis, and both cars will set you back well over ₹9 lakh for the top-end variants. The popularity of automatic gearboxes is on the rise, and this trend is no different when it comes to hatchbacks.

The Ignis is nearly ₹60,000 cheaper for the cheapest automatic variant compared to the Swift, although let’s be honest, given how much fun to drive the Swift manual is, why would you even go for an automatic?

When it comes to the Maruti Ignis and Maruti Swift engine difference, a layman would be forgiven if they thought there wasn’t a difference between the two, as both are powered by 1.2-litre engines. However, the similarities end there.

While the Swift gets a DualJet motor, the Ignis is powered by a VVT producing 88.5 bhp and 82 bhp respectively. They do generate the same amount of torque but drive very differently. The Ignis is the more fun-to-drive and driver-focused car, with its tight chassis more than keeping up with the rev-happy motor.

The Swift is the more sedate car of the two, and will quietly go about its business without fuss. If you do push it, the Swift can be a fun-to-drive hatch given its diminutive size but still doesn’t feel as sharp or tight as the Ignis.

Much like the exterior, the Swift is the roomier of the two on the inside as well. Surprisingly, the Ignis’ boot is just 8 litres smaller than Swift’s, making both cars capable of carrying enough luggage for a weekend road trip.

Although the Ignis has the more modern-looking dash, it is cramped, and five adults can make an otherwise nice-looking interior feel outdated due to its dimensions. Both the hatchbacks offer a similar package in terms of features and most of the bells and whistles are available for the buyers of both cars.

The Swift and Ignis both offer commendable safety features. The Swift comes equipped with dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, seat belt pre-tensioners, and ISOFIX child seat anchors. Additionally, it boasts features like an electronic stability program (ESP) and hill hold control in higher trims.

On the other hand, the Ignis also incorporates dual airbags, ABS with EBD, and ISOFIX mounts for child safety. The Ignis sets itself apart with its unique TECT (Total Effective Control Technology) body, ensuring enhanced crash safety. It includes reverse parking sensors, making it practical for urban driving. While both cars provide a decent level of safety, the Ignis’s TECT body and reverse parking sensors give it a slight edge in this comparison.

Our Verdict

While you can’t go wrong with either of these little hatchbacks, the Swift is the more practical option. Not only is it more spacious, it also has a more tractable engine and road manners. Couple that with a sporty road presence, and it’s a no-brainer.

The Ignis, on the other hand, is a more engaging, no-nonsense drive and is at home in the city. It may be smaller than the Swift but that adds to its already cute exterior and arguably better looks. Whichever one you pick, you are guaranteed to get the reliability and low maintenance costs Maruti Suzuki is known for.
