With the launch of the all-new Amaze in India, Honda Motors India has made a very bold statement indicating that it means business.  Leaving the other C1-segment sedans aside, the primary target for the Honda Amaze is going be the Maruti-Suzuki Swift DZire. The DZire has successfully held its stronghold in this segment for almost 10 years despite the rapidly rising competition. With the 2017 model update, it managed to strengthen it’s grip even more. While the previous generation of the Honda Amaze did fairly decent on its own, it was no threatening matter for Maruti-Suzuki. Honda has done an amazing job in managing the space within the chassis in comparison to the Maruti DZire. The new Amaze is 20mm longer. In terms of width, the Honda Amaze is 40mm shorter then Dzire. Both the cars are powered by 1.2 -litre, 4-cylinder engines. The power output on the new Amaze (Petrol) is 7PS more than on DZire. But the DZire generates 3Nm more torque then Amaze. No surprise here that the Maruti Dzire outshines Amaze in terms of mileage. It has a higher fuel storage capacity as well.

In the diesel variant, the Amaze packs more power and torque than the Dzire with 25PS and 10Nm respectively. However, when equipped with the CVT transmission, the Amaze’s output drops by 20PS and 40Nm. The mileage on the CVT enabled amaze also drops by 3.6 kmpl. On the other hand, The DZire’s AMT-equipped diesel variants remain identical to the manual versions.

The top-end Amaze gets LED position lights, LED tail lights, 15-inch alloy wheels, 7.0-inch floating Digipad 2.0 infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, rear camera with parking sensors, electrically adjustable and foldable ORVMs, height-adjustable front seat, auto climate control, cruise control, push start-stop, and steering-integrated paddle shifts (petrol-CVT).

The DZire’s equipment list consists LED projector headlamps with DRLs, leather-wrapped steering wheel, automatic headlamps, rear AC vents, smart play infotainment system, auto gear shift and refined speedometer with satin chrome meter rings.  Both the cars include standard safety features like ABS with EBD, dual airbags, and ISOFIX mounts.

In terms of pricing, The all-new Amaze costs Rs 5.59 lakh and goes till Rs 8.99 lakh and comes in 4 variants. The DZire is priced between Rs 5.56 lakh to Rs 9.43 lakh and comes with the option of AMT in the top ZDi+ variant.

Honda Amaze VS Maruti Swift DZire: Verdict

• Dimensions – The all-new Amaze has pretty much the same length as the Dzire but is 40mm lesser in terms of width. This implies that three people will be able to sit more comfortably in the DZire. The DZire is also marginally taller making it the winner in terms of interior space.
• Performance – Both the cars are powered by 1.2 litre 4-cylinder engine while they vary slightly in terms of power delivery. In the petrol version, the Amaze makes slightly more power but the DZire makes slightly more torque. The diesel Amaze makes significantly more of both, torque and power than the DZire. Both these figures, however, take a hit on the automatic variants. The DZire is also lighter than the Amaze by about 50 kilos. In the performance aspect, it’s difficult to pick a clear winner of the two.
• Fuel Efficiency and Range– The DZire has higher mileage and higher fuel storage capacity as well. No second thoughts here as to which is better.
• Features – Both the cars come with top end features on most of their variants. The city/civic inspired design of the Honda Amaze and a CVT option could give much premium appeal to the car. Not to mention those paddle shifters on the Amaze are sure to make you feel like you’re driving a performance tuned car. The Amaze takes the upper hand here.
• Price – Astonishingly enough, Honda is neck and neck close with the DZire here in the basic models. In the topmost Diesel automatic variants, Honda is cheaper by almost Rs.50000! Although this is just the introductory pricing for the Amaze, it takes the victory here till they increase.
• Final Verdict – Comparing the above aspects, the DZire wins in two, the Amaze wins in two and both draw in one. So overall it boils down to your preference. The DZire will do better in terms of frugality and practicality -while the Amaze does better in terms of being premium and equipment packed. As of now, there isn’t a sure shot winner of the two.
