The vehicle houses a large 2393 cc turbocharged diesel engine that delivers a highly competent 148 bhp and a massive 343 Nm of torque available evenly across the lower rev range. Interestingly, the entire line-up gets a 5-speed manual transmission. While the clutch travel is slightly long, the gear shifts slot in securely. The true habitat of the Toyota Innova Crysta is the open highway. It’s where the substantial kerb weight and long wheelbase return high straight-line stability, remaining unfazed by heavy crosswinds at triple-digit speeds. While the tall height naturally results in noticeable body roll around fast corners, the vehicle's grip levels remain secure. The braking system also provides progressive stopping power, while the torquey diesel engine can handle continuous high-speed overtakes.

Selecting one variant over the other mostly depends on how much you’re willing to pay, or the level of essentials you will be comfortable with.

GX

The GX features a capacitive touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, 16-inch alloy wheels, and manual air conditioning. Safety remains uncompromised with 3 airbags, ABS with EBD and BA, and Vehicle Stability Control. There’s a lower G trim according to some aggregators, but Toyota India lists it as unavailable.

GX+

The GX+ is a sensible middle ground, with some extra premium touches like a wood-finish door inner garnish, but keeps the base “Dot Type" multi-information display. It also has a highly practical rear back monitor with a digital video recorder (DVR) for enhanced safety during tight reversing manoeuvres.

VX

The VX trim is where the Innova Crysta cost starts nearing ₹25 lakh. It has an automatic climate control system, a smart entry system, and an elegant leather-wrapped steering wheel with a Grace Copper ornament. Automatic LED projector headlamps and stylish chrome door handles enhance the exterior.

ZX

The flagship ZX trim of the Toyota Innova Crysta is only available as a 7-seater; it boasts dual-tone black and hazel brown leather upholstery, an 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, and a tyre pressure monitoring system. It rides on premium 17-inch alloy wheels.

The Innova Crysta manages an estimated ARAI-certified mileage of up to 11.33 kmpl, making long-distance interstate tours relatively light on the wallet. Fuel-tank capacity sits at 55 litres.

Front Profile

The GX trim has silver accents on the grille. Moving up to the higher VX and ZX trims rewards buyers with a striking new design chrome grille and automatic LED projector headlamps with a halogen clearance lamp.

The GX and GX+ variants get 16-inch alloy wheels. The flagship ZX trim, however, stands out by riding on larger 17-inch alloy wheels. The VX and ZX models have chrome door outside handles and a black-out door frame, replacing the basic body-coloured handles found on lower trims.

Rear Profile

The rear of the Innova Crysta car has a bumper that matches the body colour across all trims, but the VX and ZX grades incorporate chrome garnish and blackout tape for a more premium finish. To clearly distinguish its identity, the GX model also features a bold "CRYSTA" embossed bumper emblem.

Most of the elements inside the Toyota Innova Crysta feel durable, as if they would last years of heavy-duty use.

Front Row

The driver’s cockpit features a urethane steering wheel with a silver ornament on lower trims, which is swapped for a premium leather wrap with a Grace Copper ornament on the VX and ZX models. The standard multi-information display on the base models is upgraded to a TFT MID with blue illumination and 3D design on the top-tier variant. You also get an 8-way power-adjustable driver seat on the flagship ZX.

Second Row

Buyers can configure the vehicle as a 7-seater with highly comfortable captain seats in the middle row, or go for the versatile Innova Crysta 8-seater layout featuring a bench seat. While lower trims use durable black fabric, the VX introduces premium black fabric with a stitched "CRYSTA" insignia.

Boot Space, Storage & Practicality

Starting with 300 litres by default, the boot space opens up to over 500 litres once the third row is folded up. The cabin offers other practical storage solutions as well, including a seat back pocket with a shopping hook.

Toyota has incrementally improved the vehicle's tech suite a lot. All the trims come equipped with an 8-inch touch screen display that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The multi-information instrument cluster display for the driver, meanwhile, sits at 4.2 inches.

Climate control is handled manually on the GX and GX+ trims, but the VX and ZX grades feature automatic climate control with a cool start and register ornament. And to improve convenience, the higher variants also have a smart entry key with a push start/stop button, cruise control for relaxed highway touring, and a dedicated wireless charger. The VX and ZX models benefit from indirect blue ambient illumination, too.

The Toyota Innova Crysta is a very safe car to be in. Its earlier model already had a 5-star ASEAN NCAP rating.

Passive Safety

The GX and GX+ variants include 3 airbags, specifically for the driver, front passenger, and driver knee. However, the VX and ZX trims improve occupant protection more, expanding the SRS airbag count to 7 units by adding front side and curtain shield airbags. A seat belt warning system for all three rows is standard across the trims.

Active Safety

Active safety features are universally applied. Every model has ABS with EBD and Brake Assist (BA), Vehicle Stability Control, and Hill Start Assist Control. And to help manoeuvre this large vehicle safely, the GX+ grade introduces a back monitor with a digital video recorder (DVR). At the same time, the VX and ZX trims feature front clearance sonar with MID indication.

Despite its unique ladder-frame diesel positioning, the Toyota Innova Crysta faces competition from a mix of modern MPVs and SUVs in India. Three names worth discussing are the Mahindra XUV 7XO, Kia Carens, and its sibling, the Toyota Innova Hycross.

Toyota Innova Hycross

Sitting right alongside it in the showroom, the Toyota Innova Hycross is priced between ₹18.70 lakh and ₹32.95 lakh. While the Hycross offers a more car-like monocoque ride, a panoramic sunroof, and highly efficient hybrid petrol options, it doesn’t have a diesel engine. So, the Crysta is the ideal choice for buyers needing relentless diesel torque.

Mahindra XUV 7XO

Priced highly competitively between ₹13.99 lakh and ₹25.94 lakh, the Mahindra XUV 7XO attracts buyers looking for advanced technology. It offers a punchy diesel engine, a massive twin-screen interior layout, and Level 2 ADAS features. However, the XUV700's third-row space is notably cramped compared to the sprawling, full-size accommodation provided by the Toyota MPV.

Kia Carens

The Kia Carens targets the budget-conscious family segment with prices starting at ₹11.02 lakh. It has a highly refined cabin and efficient diesel-automatic options. But it simply cannot match the Crysta's sheer structural robustness, overall cabin width, and proven long-term resale value.

Like every car, even the new Toyota Innova Crysta gets some things right, while some things are left wanting.

Space, durability, and peace of mind over reliability are what you can expect without any compromises from the Toyota Innova Crysta. If the end goal is to buy a vehicle that can reliably transport seven or eight adults across state lines in supreme comfort, there are very few equally capable alternatives available on the market. It is a fairly competent practical tool for large families and long-distance tourers.

However, it is still not for everyone. The absence of an automatic transmission stands out, since it can get tiring to drive in constant bumper-to-bumper city traffic at some point. And if you prioritise a plush, car-like ride, a petrol-hybrid powertrain, or modern Level 2 ADAS features, the monocoque Toyota Innova Hycross is a far more sophisticated option. Additionally, buyers on a stricter budget might find the Kia Carens to be a more accessible urban MPV. But regarding absolute, uncompromising ruggedness, the Crysta is hard to beat for Indian highways.
