Outline

Recently, the Kia Sorento hybrid has been caught on camera testing on Indian roads, and this time it is not sitting quietly in a parking lot under a cover. It is actually out there on highways getting properly evaluated for Indian conditions. That is a big deal because it means Kia is moving fast, and the launch is not too far away.

This upcoming Kia hybrid SUV carries a lot of weight. It will be Kia's first hybrid in India and the brand's first true 7-seater SUV sold here. It is also Kia's fourth serious attempt at the premium segment.

The Kia Sorento test mule spotted in India was heavily camouflaged, but its overall shape was clearly visible. It has an upright, boxy design with a tall roofline, wide rear, and long wheelbase, suggesting good third-row space.

On the global model, which the Indian version is expected to closely follow, the front features Kia’s signature Tiger Nose grille, vertically positioned LED headlamps, and Y-shaped LED DRLs that also function as turn indicators. At the rear, it gets wide connected LED tail lamps and a clean, broad tailgate.

The test car was also seen with 19-inch alloy wheels that appear to have hybrid-specific styling, similar to what is offered on global hybrid variants. Internationally, the Sorento measures 4,815 mm in length with a 2,815 mm wheelbase. For context, it is longer than the Toyota Fortuner and most three-row SUVs in its segment. This added length should translate to better third-row legroom and more usable boot space with all seats in place.

Kia Sorento interior, features, & safety

The Kia Sorento, globally, gets a dual 12.3-inch screen setup, one for the driver’s instrument cluster and one for infotainment, housed in a wide curved panel across the dashboard. The layout looks clean and modern without being overdone.

Features expected on the India-spec model include a panoramic sunroof, powered and ventilated front seats, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a head-up display, a 360-degree camera system, a Bose 12-speaker sound system, and multi-zone automatic climate control.

The rotary gear selector seen in earlier interior spy shots suggests that India could get the hybrid variant. This type of selector is commonly used in hybrids and EVs and helps keep the centre console clean and uncluttered.

Kia is also expected to offer its Level 2 ADAS suite on the Sorento in India. This includes lane keep assist, forward collision warning, autonomous emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Standard safety features are likely to include multiple airbags, electronic stability control, ABS, a tyre pressure monitoring system, hill start assist, parking sensors, and 360-degree camera, among others.

Upcoming Kia Sorento hybrid engine specs

The Kia Sorento is expected to get a 1.6-litre turbo-petrol engine paired with an electric motor. The petrol engine produces around 178PS and 265Nm, while the motor adds about 65PS and 250Nm, taking the combined output to around 243PS.

It comes with a 6-speed automatic transmission. Globally, both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive options are offered, and India could get both. Claimed fuel efficiency is around 14.8 kmpl for FWD and 13.8 kmpl for AWD. A petrol-only version may arrive later, while a diesel option is unlikely at launch. The plug-in hybrid variant available globally is also not expected for India at this stage.

The Sorento is already sold in markets like the United States, South Korea, Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom, and is positioned as a mid-size SUV.

Kia Sorento India launch timeline and price expectations

Kia confirmed the Sorento for India as part of its broader electrification roadmap, where it plans to have eight hybrid or electric models in the country by 2030. The Sorento is the first step in that plan. Road testing is now firmly underway, which typically means a launch is somewhere between six and twelve months away. Most estimates point to the second half of 2026, with the festive season window looking very likely for the actual launch event.

Expected pricing is between Rs 28 lakh and Rs 40 lakh (ex-showroom), with top variants possibly going up to Rs 45 lakh. If it is locally assembled at Kia’s Anantapur plant, pricing could be more competitive, especially for lower variants.
