India's electric vehicle segment is getting busier by the month. Tata Motors has long dominated the affordable EV space with models like the Nexon EV and Punch EV. But a serious challenger may now be in the works.

Chinese automaker Chery Automobile has filed a patent for the QQ3 EV in India. This is not a random formality. Chery has been systematically patenting multiple vehicles in India as part of its partnership with JSW Motor. Each patent signals intent and the QQ3 EV is perhaps the most interesting one yet.

The QQ3 launched in China just weeks ago and racked up around 57,000 bookings almost immediately. It starts at CNY 58,900 which converts to roughly Rs 8 lakh. If something even close to that pricing makes it to India, the affordable EV market here will look very different.

New Chery QQ3 EV could enter India — Aimed at mass market buyers

The QQ brand has existed for years under Chery but it was previously associated with tiny city cars. The new QQ3 is a completely different animal. It is a proper compact car measuring 4,195 mm in length which puts it in the same ballpark as the Tata Nexon.

Chery has also partnered with JSW Group to bring its new electric vehicles to India. JSW is expected to launch models like the Jetour T2 PHEV, Jaecoo J5, and iCar V23 first. The QQ3 EV patent suggests a more affordable, mass-market EV could come later.

The patent filing in India shows clear long-term plans. Chery has been filing multiple patents recently, which indicates it is seriously preparing for the Indian market.

Chery QQ3 EV design — Square within round

Chery describes the QQ3 design as “square within round.” In simple terms, it mixes curved body lines with a more structured overall shape. The front gets Q-shaped LED headlights, which act as a signature design element. Like most EVs, it has a closed front grille. It also uses semi-flush door handles and places the charging port on the rear fender. It comes with 16 or 17-inch dual-tone alloy wheels.

In terms of size, the QQ3 measures 4,195 mm in length, 1,811 mm in width, 1,573 mm in height, and has a 2,700 mm wheelbase. This puts it in the compact SUV space, similar to rivals in its segment.  There is also a 70-litre frunk at the front, which adds extra storage that many competitors do not offer.

The China-spec Chery QQ3 EV gets a simple but modern cabin setup. The dashboard has a large 15.6-inch 2.5K touchscreen for infotainment, along with an 8.8-inch digital driver display. Both run on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 chip, which is usually seen in more expensive EVs.

It also includes an AI voice assistant to control basic functions. Features like heated and ventilated seats are included, too, which is uncommon at this price point. Other features include a 50W wireless charger, a six-speaker sound system, V2L support, and 256-colour ambient lighting.

On the practical side, the boot offers 375 litres of space, which can expand to 1,450 litres with the seats folded. The cabin also has up to 38 storage spaces for small items.

Chery QQ3 EV battery, range & performance

Internationally, the Chery QQ3 EV is offered with two battery options: 29.48 kWh and 41.28 kWh. The smaller battery delivers a claimed 310 km CLTC range and comes with a 77 PS motor producing 90 Nm of torque. The larger battery offers a claimed 420 km range and is paired with a 121 PS motor producing 115 Nm of torque.

One standout point is the rear-wheel-drive setup. Most budget EVs use front-wheel drive but this layout usually gives better balance and more engaging driving feel.

In terms of performance, it can go from 0 to 50 km/h in 3.8 seconds, with a top speed of 125 km/h. For charging, it takes around 16.5 minutes to go from 30 to 80% on a DC fast charger. Both versions support 6.6 kW AC charging.

China price vs India price — what should you expect?

In China, the Chery QQ3 EV is priced between CNY 58,900 and CNY 78,900. That roughly comes to Rs 8 lakh to Rs 10.78 lakh, which is very strong pricing for what the car offers. For India, the price will likely be higher due to import duties, taxes, and localisation costs. If Chery and JSW Group manage local assembly or production, the price could stay more competitive.

A realistic estimate for India would be around Rs 12 lakh to Rs 16 lakh. Even at that level, it would still compete with models like the Tata Nexon EV and Mahindra XUV 3XO EV.

Is the QQ3 EV coming to India and when?

There is no official launch date or confirmed timeline from Chery or JSW Group yet. But the patent filing is an important signal. Companies usually file patents when they are seriously planning a launch, not just exploring ideas.

JSW Motor is expected to first bring premium and lifestyle models to India. The QQ3 EV may come later as a mass-market product after the brand builds its network and presence. At the same time, the Indian EV market is growing quickly. Being early in the affordable segment can make a big difference.
