Mahindra hybrid SUVs incoming — Based on both ICE and EVs?

A spokesperson from Mahindra had earlier said that the carmaker is ready to launch a hybrid SUV in India, if it believes there is enough demand from consumers in the future. Recent media reports suggest that the carmaker is now planning to launch at least two such vehicles in the near future. Here’s everything we know so far about the upcoming Mahindra hybrid SUVs in India.

Range extenders for EVs

As per a report by Autocar India, Mahindra is mulling to put hybrid setups on both its ICE and EV lineups. The electric Mahindra SUVs are likely to get range extender systems that will include an engine to act as a generator for the battery, which in turn will power the electric motor(s). The engine on duty is expected to be a 1.2-litre petrol engine.

Series parallel for ICE

On the other hand, for its ICE SUVs, Mahindra is likely to use a series parallel hybrid system wherein the electric motor(s) will run the car at lower speeds while the engine will take over when more power is required.

Upcoming Mahindra XUV 3XO hybrid SUV

As per the same report, a hybrid version of Mahindra’s entry-level SUV — Mahindra XUV 3XO — is on the cards, and is likely to come with a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine paired with a strong hybrid setup. This should give the car class-leading efficiency numbers, while also potentially increasing its power figures by a slight margin. Concrete details are awaited from the manufacturer.
