Production flagged off by Prime Minister Modi

 

India’s largest automaker, Maruti Suzuki, has rolled out production of its first electric model, the eVitara, at the company’s Hansalpur plant in Gujarat. The production commencement was formally flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The SUV was originally showcased at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo last year and marks the company’s entry into the electric vehicle (EV) segment.

Four EVs planned by 2030

 

The eVitara is the first of four battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) that Maruti Suzuki intends to launch by the end of this decade. Parent company Suzuki Motor Corporation has set a target of building 67,000 EVs in FY2026, with the majority destined for export markets. Suzuki Motor Corporation is positioning India as the global hub for EV production, given the market’s scale and strategic importance. India accounted for 61% of Suzuki’s global output and 57% of worldwide sales in the last financial year.

At the moment, Maruti Suzuki is yet to reveal the variants and prices of the e Vitara. Therefore, we can only estimate the Maruti e Vitara, which is likely to fall in the range of Rs 20 - 25 lakh ex-showroom. Speaking of the Maruti e Vitara rivals, it will rub shoulders with the Hyundai Creta Electric, MG ZS EV, Tata Curvv EV, Mahindra XUV400 and BYD Atto 3.
