No cash at toll plazas after April — Here’s what travelers must know
- 1Cash payments at national highway toll plazas will be phased out
- 2FASTag and UPI-based payments will allow vehicles to pass tolls without stopping
- 3No-stop cashless toll system is already being tested at 25 locations
A major shift is coming to toll payments on national highways. The government plans to roll out fully cashless toll payments at national highway toll plazas, completely eliminating the use of cash. Although no official notification has been issued yet, the cash ban at these plazas will come into effect within the next few months.
Cash Ban at National Highway Toll Plazas

The cash ban at national highway toll plazas tackles the chaos of cash payments. Drivers often face long waits while others hunt for exact change, bringing the entire line to a standstill. Receipts get handed out but usually end up lost or ignored. Cash also opens doors for booth staff to extort extra money from drivers, pocketing the difference with no paper trail.
Cashless toll payment ends those issues. A quick scan lets cars pass right through and clears the backups at plazas. Spending stays trackable as well. Cash offers no records, leaving toll costs uncheckable and errors hidden. Digital payments fix that with safe, traceable logs in apps or bank statements. Even staff benefit by skipping cash counts which cuts mixups and theft risks.
Cashless toll payment to roll out soon
Cashless payments will begin on April 1 at the national highway toll plazas. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is expected to issue the official notification shortly. A no-stop toll system is already being tested at 25 plazas across the country.
If you use FASTag, this won’t feel new. Your tag links to your bank account, the scanner reads it, the toll is deducted, and you drive through without stopping. For others, the shift is happening quickly. Payments can also be made through UPI apps like PhonePe and Google Pay, either by scanning QR codes or using FASTag-linked options. The idea is simple, less waiting, less congestion, and faster movement on highways.
