Renault has revealed the ARAI-certified mileage of the Duster Hybrid. The figure is 29 kmpl. The SUV will launch on October 17. The Duster Hybrid will be the third engine option on the new Duster, which went on sale earlier this year from Rs 10.49 lakh. It is also expected to make up for the absence of a diesel engine.
Renault Duster Hybrid mileage compared with rivals

The Duster Hybrid mileage of 29 kmpl is higher than the claimed figures of the three strong hybrid SUVs it will take on. The comparison below uses the ARAI-claimed numbers.
| Strong hybrid SUV | ARAI claimed mileage |
|---|---|
| Renault Duster Hybrid | 29 kmpl |
| Maruti Victoris strong hybrid | 28.65 kmpl |
| Maruti Grand Vitara strong hybrid | 27.97 kmpl |
| Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder strong hybrid | 27.97 kmpl |
The Duster is 1.03 kmpl ahead of the Grand Vitara and Hyryder. The Victoris is the closest, with a gap of just 0.35 kmpl. ARAI figures are lab-tested, so real-world mileage will be lower and will depend on traffic and driving style.
Engine, battery and hybrid system
| Specification | Duster Hybrid |
|---|---|
| Engine | 1.8-litre petrol, strong hybrid |
| Electric motors | 2 |
| Battery | 1.4 kWh |
| Combined power | 160 PS |

| Transmission | 8-speed dedicated hybrid transmission |
| ARAI mileage | 29 kmpl |
The Renault Duster Hybrid uses the E-Tech 160 system, which combines a 1.8-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine with two electric motors. One is a 20 hp motor that works as a generator, while the 49 hp motor drives the front wheels. A 1.4 kWh battery stores the electric power.
The strong-hybrid system can drive on electric power at low speeds, recover energy during braking and switch off the petrol engine when it is not needed. Renault claims up to 80% of city driving can be done in EV mode. Unlike the Grand Vitara, Victoris and Hyryder, which use an e-CVT with no fixed gears, the Duster Hybrid uses a gearbox with fixed ratios that can shift between gears. This could make it feel more like a conventional automatic.

Its 1.4 kWh battery is also larger than the 0.60 kWh pack in the Hyryder's strong hybrid. The larger battery may support more electric driving, but Renault has not confirmed whether this is the reason for the Duster's higher claimed mileage.
