Outline

Volkswagen has been building toward the ID Polo for a couple of years now — teasing it, testing it, showing concepts that nodded toward it. Then, days before its scheduled global reveal, the internet got there first. Undisguised images of the production-ready Volkswagen ID Polo, posted on Instagram before being pulled down. The leaked images have circulated widely online and given the world its clearest look yet at what VW's most affordable EV will actually be.

The leak covered not just the base model but also the range-topping ID Polo GTI, showing both variants in production trim. The official debut is set for May 2026. Until then, here is everything the leaked images and previously confirmed details tell us about the upcoming Volkswagen ID Polo electric hatchback.

2026 Volkswagen ID Polo exterior design — Leaked images explained

The ID Polo’s production design stays close to the 2023 ID 2all concept. Autoheads familiar with the concept will recognise the finished car immediately, even down to the wheel design. That is a good thing. The concept was well received and VW has not diluted it much for production.

Up front, slim LED headlamps stretch across the nose. A horizontal bar connects them and gives a clean, contemporary look. The sealed area between the lights is typical for an EV, as no grille is needed for cooling. This section gets subtle detailing changes compared to the concept. The ORVM now have a more conventional shape. They have been toned down from the earlier concept design. The rear door handles sit on the C-pillar. This detail has been carried over from the prototype and is now confirmed for production.

Three colour and trim options were seen in the leaked images. The base model appears in yellow with a simpler exterior. It gets smaller alloy wheels, no illuminated front bar, and black mirror caps and window surrounds. A mid-spec variant in gunmetal grey gets larger alloy wheels. It also has a more polished look. The range-topping ID Polo GTI, finished in red, is the most visually aggressive of the three.

Upcoming Volkswagen ID Polo dimensions — Bigger than the Old Polo India knew

Volkswagen has confirmed the ID Polo's dimensions: 4,053mm long, 1,816mm wide, 1,530mm tall, with a 2,600mm wheelbase. To put that in context, the India-spec petrol Polo — which left Indian showrooms in April 2022 — was under four metres in length. The ID Polo is meaningfully larger, sitting closer in footprint to the European-spec Polo than the compact version Indian buyers knew. This is a five-door hatchback with real interior room, not a city runabout.

ID Polo Battery options and range — Two packs, up to 450km

Volkswagen has confirmed two battery options for the ID Polo. The entry version uses a 37kWh lithium iron phosphate battery. This chemistry is known for durability and stability, though not for high energy density. It is offered with either an 85kW or 99kW motor. Both versions are front-wheel drive. This setup targets buyers who prioritise cost and everyday usability over maximum range.

The larger option is a 52kWh nickel manganese cobalt battery. It is paired with a 155kW motor in the standard model. The claimed WLTP range goes up to 450km. DC fast charging supports speeds of up to 130kW. This allows for quicker top-ups at compatible chargers. The ID Polo GTI uses the same 52kWh battery. It gets a more powerful 166kW motor.

MEB+ Platform: What It Means for the VW ID Polo

The Volkswagen ID Polo will be the first model built on the updated MEB+ platform. Volkswagen’s MEB architecture already underpins models like the ID.3 and ID.4. The updated version brings improvements in charging speed and range efficiency. It also supports newer safety systems, including the ADAS suite.

The technical development of the ID Polo was led by Seat and Cupra within the Volkswagen Group, while the design work came out of VW's headquarters in Wolfsburg. This shared approach is common across the group. It helps reduce development time and costs compared to building a car independently.

Upcoming Volkswagen ID Polo price and market — What to Expect

European pricing has been set at €25,000. That is about €5,000 higher than the most affordable petrol Polo sold there. This difference mainly comes from the higher cost of batteries in electric cars. VW’s approach is simple. The ID Polo is meant to be the entry point into its EV lineup. It is positioned as the most accessible way to own a Volkswagen electric car.

Whether the ID Polo will come to India is still unclear. Volkswagen does not currently sell any EVs here. On paper, the ID Polo could be a good starting point. But factors like charging infrastructure and pricing will matter. Nothing has been confirmed yet. It is also uncertain if the Polo name will return in electric form for India. For now, attention is on its European debut in May 2026. After that, VW is expected to share its wider rollout plans.
