Along with being the most populous state in India, Uttar Pradesh also has the third highest number of registered motor vehicles in the country. With nearly 10% of the country’s registered motor vehicles, the RTO in UP faces a huge responsibility of making the application and tracking process efficient. To tackle the volume, the state transport department runs a dedicated helpline to help the applicants with DL application status related queries in Uttar Pradesh. However, like the rest of the country, the most convenient way of driving licence status in UP remains online through the sarathi.parivahan portal.
Following are the steps of tracking the driving licence status online, along with important information like validity and expiration periods, and things to remember.
When to Check Your Driving Licence Status in UP?
Once you have completed your driving test, you can check your driving licence status online, as in any other state in India.The status may take up to two weeks to update on the website. It is important to note that the online DL status in UP check can only be done in case of a permanent DL application. This service is not available in case of a learner’s licence application, as the LL is granted the same day after the applicant clears the Learner’s Licence Test. The LL test can be taken online or in the RTO, and is only meant to test an applicant's knowledge about traffic rules, signs and symbols.
Steps to Check Driving Licence Status Online in Uttar Pradesh
You can track the Driving Licence status in UP online conveniently by visiting either the Transport Department’s website of the Government of Uttar Pradesh, or the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways’ (MoRTH) Parivahan website. Both these platforms ultimately lead to the central government’s Sarathi.Parivahan portal, which is a one-stop portal for all things DL. On the Sarathi portal, one can apply for and track a new DL application, apply for a renewal or duplicate licence, access your DL extract, and apply for an International Driving Permit.
How to Check Driving Licence (DL) Status in UP Online via Sarathi Website?
To check your DL status in UP, you can either head over to the Parivahan website, or the state transport department website. Both websites will ultimately redirect you to the Sarathi portal.
Step 1: Go to MoRTH’s Parivahan website: https://parivahan.gov.in/parivahan/.

Step 3: Select “Driving Licence Related Services” from the drop-down.

Step 4: You will be redirected to the Sarathi.Parivahan portal. On the homepage, select Uttar Pradesh as the applicable state from the drop down.

Step 5: On the next page, a pop-up window will open. “Skip” the pop-up and click on the “Application Status” button from the menu bar of the page that opens.

Step 6: Fill in the required information like application Number, date of birth, and Captcha, then proceed to click “Submit”.

Step 7: In case you have applied for the DL through portals like e-Mitra or e-District, then select the applicable option from the page. Fill the requested additional information, and press “Submit”.

How to Check Driving Licence Status in UP Online via State Transport Official Website?
Step 1: Go to the Uttar Pradesh Transport Department’s website: https://uptransport.upsdc.gov.in/en-us/.
Step 2: From the navigation menu bar, click on “Online Services” and hover the cursor on “Driving Licence Related Services” from the drop-down.
Step 3: From the drop-down, click on “Application Status” at the bottom of the list. You will be redirected to the Sarathi.Parivahan portal.
Step 4: From the menu bar, click on the “Application Status” button on the top right of the screen.
Step 5: On the page that opens, fill in the required information like application number, date of birth, and press “Submit”.
Step 6: In case you have applied for the DL through portals like e-Mitra or e-District, then select the applicable option from the page. Fill the requested additional information, and press “Submit”.
Step 7: The driving licence status in UP will be displayed on the screen.
What to Keep in Mind While Checking Driving Licence Status in UP Online?
Before you start tracking the DL status in UP online, ensure that you keep the following points in mind:
- The process of checking the driving licence status in UP is free of cost, and the applicant can check the same online as many times as needed.
- The applicant must make sure that they don’t misplace their application number, as the application number is required to trackthe driving licence status.
- If the application number is misplaced, one can visit the Sarathi.Parivahan portal and retrieve their application number online.
- Only permanent DL application status in UP can be tracked online, and not learner’s licence status.
- The online status of DL becomes available on the portal in about 2 weeks after the driving test.
- For first time applicants, it is mandatory to apply for the learner’s licence first before applying for the permanent DL.
- The applicant can apply for the LL, and take the theory test online. If the applicant passes the test, the LL is issued the same day.
- The applicant can only apply for the permanent DL 30 days after the issuance of LL, and up to 180 days from the date of issuance.
- Once the applicant has applied for a permanent DL, they have to visit the RTO or the authorised driving schools, and demonstrate their driving skills. The driving inspector evaluates the test and approves or rejects applicants based on the driving skills.
- It is only after the applicant has appeared for this driving test, and has submitted their biometrics and documents for evaluation, that the process of checking driving licence status in UP online is needed.
- Once the DL status in UP is shown as approved, the DL will be delivered at the applicant’s home within a week to 10 days. Overall, the process takes about 30 days, from the time of the driving test, to the verification, and finally the home delivery of the DL.
- In case the applicant’s DL application is rejected, they can apply for a re-test after 7 days.
Facts About Driving Licence Status in UP
- The Learner’s Licence has a validity of up to 6 months, and the applicant must apply for a permanent DL between 30 to 180 days of obtaining a learner’s licence.
- The applicant has to physically visit an RTO or an authorised driving school to appear for the driving test.
- The DL is issued for up to 20 years, or till the applicant is 40 years of age, whichever is earlier, and must be renewed before the expiration of its validity.
- In case the DL is lost or stolen or damaged, one can apply for a duplicate DL online through the Sarathi.Parivahan portal.
- The applicant must be above the age of 18 to apply for a DL. Though there is no maximum age limit for holding a DL in India, the applicant must submit a doctor approved fitness certificate if they are above 40 years of age. Further, the DL is issued only for a period of 5 years if the applicant is older than 55 years. Post that, the DL must be renewed by following the due process and submitting the latest certificate of medical fitness.
- A DL can be renewed one month before the expiration of its validity.
- If the DL is renewed within a year of its expiry, the applicant does not need to give the driving test again. After one year, the driving test must be passed afresh, and after five years of expiration of DL validity, the whole process of DL application must be done again.
