Renault Kwid safety ratings

The latest crash test results from Global NCAP have shed light on the safety levels of several cars in India, including the upgraded version of the Renault Kwid. The Kwid, hailed as India's 'car of the year’ in 2016,' has left the Global NCAP both surprised and disappointed. Despite Renault's efforts to enhance safety, the Kwid still received a mere one-star rating for adult occupant protection in the frontal impact test.

The standard Renault Kwid lacks airbags, and prior tests by Global NCAP resulted in a dismal zero-star rating for adult occupant protection and a two-star rating for child occupant protection. The latest version, equipped with a driver's airbag and seatbelt pretensioner, exhibited high chest deflection during testing, explaining its one-star rating for the driver's seat.

If you're considering the Renault Kwid as your next car, you're probably curious about its safety rating. While the Kwid offers an economical choice for those on a tight budget, potential buyers should weigh its safety rating scores when making their decision. Dive in as we discuss this compact hatchback’s safety rating in detail.

Renault Kwid Adult Occupant Protection Rating

The Renault Kwid has been tested for adult occupant protection by the Global NCAP to check its ability to protect its passengers. The testing body gave it a score of 8.28 out of 17 points and a 1-star rating. It noted that the airbags provided effective protection for the driver's head and neck. However, there was inadequate chest protection due to significant chest compression, and the passenger's chest also received insufficient protection.

It was also observed that there was a risk of the passenger's knees coming into contact with hazardous structures on the dashboard. The car's body shell was deemed unstable and incapable of withstanding further stress. It's worth noting that Renault reinforced the structure, but only on the driver's side, neglecting the passenger's side.

Renault Kwid Child Occupant Protection Rating

In terms of child occupant protection, GNCAP noted that the child seat designed for a 3-year-old couldn't adequately prevent excessive forward movement during the impact, resulting in high biomechanical readings. Similarly, the 18-month-old child's dynamic performance allowed head contact with the front backrest, leading to elevated biomechanical readings.

It was observed that the installation instructions for both child seats were insufficient and not permanently affixed to the seat. The presence of static three-point seat belts in the rear seats complicated the correct installation of child restraint systems (CRS). Additionally,  the Kwid did not feature a passenger airbag making it lose several points in the crash tests.

Overall, the Kwid could only manage a 1-star rating and a mere score of 10.91 out of 49 points, indicating that while it does offer a budget-friendly ride, this may be at the expense of its passengers’ safety.

Renault Kwid Safety Assist Test

In line with the Global NCAP #SaferCarsForIndia initiative, the Renault Kwid underwent safety testing to assess its potential in reducing accident risks. The Kwid includes safety features like dual front airbags, ABS with EBD (Anti-lock Braking System with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution), and a Traction Control System.

Additionally, the car is equipped with a rearview camera, enhancing parking in tight spaces. These comprehensive safety elements significantly contributed to the Kwid's performance in the safety assist test, further strengthening its overall safety rating.

Renault Kwid Motorcyclist Safety Test

India's high two-wheeler population raises concerns about rider safety. To address this, the Global NCAP introduced the Motorcyclist Safety Test, evaluating a car's ability to protect motorcyclists in collisions. It's essential to note that the Renault Kwid has not undergone this specific test, designed mainly for vehicles with higher body structures.

Renault Kwid Safety Features

The Renault Kwid is equipped with a range of safety features designed to enhance passenger protection and overall safety. These features include dual front airbags, which provide crucial protection in the event of a frontal collision.

The Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) prevents wheel lockup during hard braking, ensuring steering control is maintained, while Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) optimally distributes braking force to each wheel for improved stopping performance. Seatbelt pretensioners automatically tighten the seat belts in a collision, reducing forward movement of occupants. The Kwid's higher ground clearance makes it suitable for rough roads, and rear parking sensors assist during parking manoeuvers.

Depending on the variant, it may feature additional safety elements such as child safety locks, body structure designed for impact energy absorption, driver-side airbags, and seatbelt warning indicators.

Below is a summary table highlighting key safety features of the Renault Kwid:

Safety FeatureDescription
Dual AirbagsThe Kwid comes equipped with driver and passenger airbags which help reduce the impact of a collision.
Anti-lock Braking System (ABS)The ABS helps prevent the wheels from locking up during sudden braking, thereby improving control and stability.

The Bottom Line

In conclusion, the safety rating of the Renault Kwid highlights both its strengths and areas for improvement. While the compact car boasts commendable features such as dual front airbags and seatbelt pretensioners, it still falls short in achieving a top safety rating. The recent one-star Global NCAP safety rating for adult occupant protection underscores the need for further enhancements, especially in terms of structural integrity and additional safety features.

However, Renault's commitment to safety is evident, as seen in their efforts to introduce safety improvements, albeit primarily on the driver's side. As the automotive industry continues to prioritise safety, we can anticipate future iterations of the Kwid to incorporate more advanced safety technologies, ultimately offering passengers a safer and more secure driving experience.
