First introduced in the Indian market in 2005, the Toyota Innova is one of the most popular MPVs in the country and has always set benchmarks when it comes to long-term reliability, practicality, and in-cabin experience. In the last couple of decades, we saw several important generation updates of this Japanese MPV with the Innova Crysta being the last one to be offered with a diesel powertrain option and a ladder-on-frame construction.
Succeeding the Innova Crysta is the Innova Hycross, which not only comes with a completely new (Toyota New Global Architecture) TNGA platform but also features frugal petrol powertrain options and better in-cabin comfort. It is also for the first time that Toyota is selling two generations of any car simultaneously, thus offering a more elaborate choice for the buyers.
But is the new Innova Hycross good enough to step into the shoes of the Innova Crysta, and does it have what is required to take Innova’s legacy ahead? Here is a detailed Toyota Innova Crysta vs Toyota Innova Hycross comparison where we compare the two MPVs in great detail, including a quick performance and features comparison.

The Innova Crysta continues to remain on sale in the Indian market at a starting price of ₹19.99 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) and is only offered with a diesel engine. On the other hand, the Innova Hycross is priced from ₹18.82 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) for the base petrol variant while the hybrid iterations of the MPV are priced from ₹25.30 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

Mileage | 15.30 km/l | 16.13 km/l (NA Petrol)21.1 km/l (Hybrid) |
Fuel Tank | 40L | 52L |
As mentioned above, the new Innova Crysta is now only offered with a 2.4-litre diesel engine that churns out a peak power and torque output of 147 bhp and 343 Nm respectively, while the Innova Hycross gets two powertrain options – a 2.0-litre TNGA naturally aspirated (NA) petrol and a 2.0-litre TNGA strong hybrid petrol.
While the NA petrol motor delivers a claimed power output of 170 bhp and 209 Nm of maximum torque, the hybrid motor, on the other hand, delivers 181 bhp and 188 Nm of maximum torque. The additional 209 Nm torque from the electric motor further helps improve the performance.
The differences between the two cars are not only limited to the powertrain options but are also noticeable in the way the two cars drive and behave at higher speeds. To begin with, the Innova Crysta, being a body-on-frame MPV, not only feels heavy around the corners but also suffers from a major body roll.
The hydraulic steering might feel heavy at lower speeds but offers a strong feel and feedback at higher speeds. The Innova Hycross, on the other hand, feels more refined and composed, while the steering is lighter at lower speeds. The high-speed stability is better, and so is the ride quality on bad roads. In all, it is the Innova Hycross that boasts better dynamics, but the Innova Crysta continues to offer a robust and reliable construction.
