Maruti Suzuki S-Presso Car - Entry-Level Nimble Hatchback
The Maruti S-Presso has been designed to fit between the traditional entry-level hatchbacks and taller, more upright city cars. It borrows the tried and tested small car basics of Maruti Suzuki and packages it in a design to give a higher driving position and better visibility on the road. This makes it especially appealing to new drivers, senior members of the family, and buyers upgrading from two-wheelers.
The S-Presso is first and foremost about ease of use. Light steering, simple controls, and a small size make it non-threatening in traffic, while the tall cabin ensures that the passengers do not feel boxed in. Over the years, it has also gained favour in rural areas and in the cab market due to its ground clearance, reliable mechanicals, and efficient air-conditioning. Rather than chasing premium features, the S-Presso car is all about the basics that matter daily: space, efficiency, comfort, and low-effort driving.
The Maruti S-Presso price starts at ₹3.50 lakh and goes up to ₹5.25 lakh (ex-showroom). S-Presso car price makes it one of the only 2 cars in India, apart from the Alto, that are available cars under 4 lakhs ex-showroom.
| Variant | Fuel / Transmission | Mileage | Ex-Showroom Price |
| S-Presso STD | Petrol MT | 24.12 kmpl | ₹3.50 lakh |
| S-Presso LXi | Petrol MT | 24.12 kmpl | ₹3.80 lakh |
| S-Presso VXi | Petrol MT | 24.76 kmpl | ₹4.30 lakh |
| S-Presso LXi CNG | CNG MT | 32.73 km/kg | ₹4.62 lakh |
| S-Presso VXi Opt AT | Petrol AMT | 25.30 kmpl | ₹4.75 lakh |
| S-Presso VXi Plus | Petrol MT | 24.76 kmpl | ₹4.80 lakh |
| S-Presso VXi CNG | CNG MT | 32.73 km/kg | ₹5.12 lakh |
| S-Presso VXi Plus Opt AT | Petrol AMT | 25.30 kmpl | ₹5.25 lakh |
The Maruti Suzuki S-Presso car is powered by a 1-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine, which is available in 5-speed manual, AMT, and a factory-fitted CNG option.
City Driving
In city conditions, the S-Presso feels light, responsive, and easy-going. The engine pulls cleanly at low speeds, and you will be able to stay in higher gears without having to constantly shift. The clutch and steering are very light, which helps to keep fatigue low in traffic.
The AMT option is for convenience. Upshifts are smooth when driving gently, though there is some planning required for quick overtakes, as downshifts take a moment. For simplicity's sake, buyers can take the AMT, and it does the job.
Highway Driving
On highways, the S-Presso is comfortable cruising between 80 - 100 kmph. It is not designed for aggressive overtaking, and quick acceleration requires a downshift. The engine is still viable for short inter-city trips, provided that expectations are kept realistic.
CNG Driving
In CNG trim, the performance is considerably softer, particularly on highways or hills. However, for city use, it is still manageable and rewards the driver with great fuel economy.
Each of the Maruti S-Presso variants is clearly spaced out to suit different budgets, with comfort and convenience increasing gradually as you move up the range.
S-Presso STD
The most basic version, which is intended strictly for budget-conscious buyers. It does not include air-conditioning, power steering, and cosmetic elements, but does include essential safety features. Best suited for commercial use or extremely cost-conscious buyers.
S-Presso LXi
Adds some basic comforts such as AC and power steering. It improves the usability on a daily basis, but it still has a bare feel to it in terms of convenience. Suitable if on a tight budget too.
S-Presso VXi
This is where the S-Presso feels completely usable for personal ownership. It adds front power windows, central locking, remote entry, and basic infotainment support. A sensible middle ground variant.
S-Presso VXi+
The most complete version. It adds a 7-inch touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, better interior finishes, and added convenience. This is the version that best represents the car's potential for everyday family use.
One of the biggest strengths of the S-Presso car is its fuel efficiency.
- Petrol MT: 24.12–24.76 kmpl
- Petrol AMT: 25.30 kmpl
- CNG: 32.73 km/kg
Under actual driving conditions, S-Presso city mileage will normally remain high because of the car's light weight and relaxed engine tuning, and highway efficiency will still be respectable when driven at steady speeds.
The Maruti Suzuki S-Presso is unique with its tall and upright stance, with 180 mm ground clearance. The design is polarising, featuring SUV-inspired touches such as a flat bonnet, upright A-pillars, and chunky body cladding. It is more focused on visibility and angles of approach and less concerned with visual elegance.
Large doors allow for easier entry, and the small size makes it ideal for narrow roads and tight parking spots. While the alloy wheels and LED elements aren't present, it still keeps the design functional and to the point in its purpose.
The upright seating provides space for four adults to sit comfortably; there is good headroom and usable legroom. The wide-opening doors are easy to enter and exit, particularly for elders.
The layout of the dashboard is simple, with the speedometer mounted centrally and basic controls. Material quality is acceptable for the segment and is more geared towards durability than luxury.
Technology remains minimal. The highlight is the 7-inch touchscreen in the higher variants. Storage is decent in front, but almost non-existent for rear passengers. The air conditioning system is a powerful performer, and it cools the cabin quickly even in extreme hot weather.
Safety on the S-Presso is all about the essentials. All variants come with dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, and rear parking sensors as standard features, which provide a basic level of protection for the occupants.
The inclusion of ABS with EBD helps maintain braking stability on slippery or uneven roads. At the same time, the rear parking sensors become especially useful as the car has a rather upright design and a tall tailgate. Even though the car has received a 1-star Global NCAP safety rating, for city-focused driving at moderate speeds, the safety package is in line with S-Presso's entry-level positioning.
The Maruti S-Presso occupies space among budget hatchbacks and micro-SUVs, where practicality and ease of driving are more important than straight-out features.
- Compared to the Renault Kwid, the S-Presso has a more upright seating position and more comfortable driving at low speeds, but the Kwid has more modern styling and better features.
- Against the Maruti WagonR, the S-Presso is more compact and easier to position on the road. Still, the WagonR offers a bigger cabin, better rear seat comfort, and superior overall versatility at a higher price.
- Versus the Alto K10, the S-Presso offers a higher seating position, visibility, and interior space.
Overall, the Maruti Suzuki S-Presso car is best suited for buyers who want maximum ease of driving, good visibility, and city-friendly dimensions, and not so much outright space, features, or premium appeal.
Here is a quick look at where the S-Presso excels and where things get compromised:
| Pros | Cons |
| Spacious cabin for four adults | Interior feels basic |
| Easy to drive in city traffic | Polarising design |
| High seating and good visibility | Limited safety features |
| Strong fuel efficiency | Lacks rear convenience features |
The Maruti Suzuki S-Presso is not making any attempt to be feature-packed, and that is the purpose. It focuses on being easy, comfortable, and unintimidating. It's great as a first car, a city runabout, or a daily commuter for buyers who value visibility, light controls, and fuel efficiency.
If you are looking for more space, features, and other value-driven convenient features, then there are some other options in the market, such as the Wagon R and Kwid. However, if ease of driving, compact size, and everyday practicality are more important than design flair or premium features, then the S-Presso delivers exactly what it promises. For first-time new car buyers and urban users, it still makes sense and is a confidence-inspiring option.
