You get 2 engine options to choose from, and they both perform differently.

• GLC 300 (Petrol): 2.0-litre turbo, 258 PS, 400 Nm, 48V mild-hybrid assist.
• GLC 220d (Diesel): 2.0-litre diesel, 197 PS, 440 Nm, 48V mild-hybrid assist.

The GLC 300 petrol is livelier with 258 PS and 400 Nm, and it is more responsive. The acceleration is quick when you are beyond the gentle throttle inputs, and it feels more eager during overtakes. The GLC 220d diesel, 197 PS and 440 Nm, puts an emphasis on the torque-rich efficiency. It is less aggressive and more relaxed at low revs and is best suited for long-distance steady cruising and chauffeured drives. Both engines are coupled with a 9-speed automatic and the 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system of Mercedes; the mild-hybrid system adds up to 23 PS and 200 Nm of temporary aid.

Both engines feel polished on the road, and the gearbox makes the shifts unobtrusive. The ride of the GLC is typically German, firm-edged but restrained, and body control is excellent for a luxury SUV of this size. The steering is quick and confidence-inspiring, and the car stays planted even when the roads get twisty. There is a muted thud on sharper bumps, but cabin comfort remains impressive.
