Porsche Macan
The Macan SUV is one of the most familiar offerings in Porsche’s Indian portfolio and is appreciated for its sports car-like performance with the practicality of SUVs. The Porsche Macan, for what it offers, is a practical and compact sporty SUV which is positioned below the Cayenne and is offered in its absolute base avatar in the country. Is this SUV for you?
| Pros | Cons |
| Great handling and sorted dynamics | Limited backseat space |
| Excellent build quality | Not-so-comfortable suspension setup |
| Powerful and responsive engines | Missing features |
The exterior styling of the Porsche Macan has more or less remained unchanged over the years, save for some subtle updates that give it a fresher appeal. The front end now features revised bumpers with conjoined 'tiger claw' air vents and a new grille, complemented by updated LED headlights. The distinctive clam-shell bonnet remains a standout feature. On the sides, the signature coupe-like design and 19-inch wheels maintain the Macan's recognizable silhouette, while a new 3D pattern on the black panel adds a touch of sophistication for enthusiasts. At the rear, the long LED light bar and prominent exhausts contribute to its sporty aesthetic.
Despite its compact dimensions, the Porsche Macan boasts an excellent cabin and a premium dashboard layout which looks upmarket and premium. For starters, there is a typical three-spoke Porche steering wheel with multiple controls and buttons, a semi-digital instrument console with a large analogue speedometer taking centre stage, and a large infotainment system sitting in the centre of the dashboard. The centre console looks busy but premium and there is no dearth of storage spaces or cupholders inside the cabin. The visibility from the driver’s seat is impressive and the dual-tone colour scheme does make the cabin look airy. The quality levels, needless to say, are top-notch and so are the NVH levels, in typical Porsche fashion.
Step into the Macan and you will notice that the seats at the front are excellent at offering good support while the cushioning too is spot on. The rear-seating experience too is excellent and you get loads of legroom and headroom at the back. Moving in and out is easy but it is the stiffer suspension setup that might not impress everyone, especially over bad city roads.
Under the hood, the new Porsche Macan gets the base-spec 2.0-litre turbo petrol motor which is capable of delivering 261hp and 400Nm of maximum torque. This motor is mated to a twin-clutch 7-speed PDK gearbox which is smooth and slick with its shifts. The power is channelled to all four wheels and you do not get multiple drive modes either; just Sport and Off-road. Having said this, the 2.0-litre motor is refined and you would not feel any noticeable lag while going hard on the throttle. Switch to the Sport mode and you will notice an even sharper and louder response from the engine while the gearshifts too will get more aggressive. The SUV manages to cross the 100kmph mark from a standstill in just 6.69 seconds while the in-gear accelerations too make it a great choice for highway driving.
On highways, the Macan truly excels, providing occupants with comfort and the driver with satisfaction from its ample power, even at high speeds. The suspension setup leans towards the stiffer side, ensuring optimal grip levels and minimal vertical movements within the cabin. Even when cornering at higher speeds, the Macan remains composed and stable. Alongside its impressive acceleration, the braking is strong and the car comes to a complete stop from higher speeds sans any drama. In all, be it a calm and relaxed daily commute or those spirited highway runs, the Porsche Macan excels at both places and offers a great package for the buyers.
| Engine | 2.0-litre turbo petrol |
| Maximum Power | 261hp |
| Maximum Torque | 400Nm |
| Transmission | 7-Speed Auto |
| Seating Capacity | 5 |
| Fuel Type | Petrol |
| Mileage | 13.2kmpl |
Despite its hefty price tag, the Porche Macan misses out on many modern safety features and what you get are features like multi-collision braking, hill hold control, TPMS, lane departure warning, airbags and curtain airbags. In addition to this, the SUV also gets a Porsche traction management system, stability management system and other basic features such as ABS and EBD. The build quality however is great and the car should keep the occupants safe in the event of a crash at legal speeds.
Unlike the global markets, the Indian market is only offered with the base-spec version of the Macan SUV which misses out on many advanced features. The SUV, despite all this, boasts features like an eight-way powered electric driver seat, sunroof, three-zone climate control, 10.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay, an eight-speaker sound system, powered tailgate and more. Features like ventilated seats, powered steering adjustment and a wireless charger along with wireless phone connectivity are definitely missed.
Sporty SUVs like the Porsche Macan are highly valued for their blend of performance, practicality, striking aesthetics, and comfortable interiors. While it faces tough competition from rivals such as the BMW X3 and the Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC43 Coupe, which also offer compelling packages, the Macan stands out as one of the most engaging vehicles to drive. Despite potentially lacking some features found in its competitors, the Macan delivers a genuine Porsche driving experience that is sure to delight enthusiasts.
