BMW X1 Long Wheelbase to be locally produced at Chennai plant

The new BMW X1 LWB will be locally produced at the BMW Group Plant in Chennai. The plant already manufactures the standard X1 and the electric iX1 LWB. Local production will also help BMW avoid the higher import duties associated with completely built-up (CBU) models.
BMW X1 Long Wheelbase dimensions
The X1 LWB is aimed at buyers seeking more rear-seat space without moving up to a larger SUV. BMW says the stretched version will offer more cabin space, comfort and technology while retaining the X1's driving characteristics.
BMW has not yet revealed the exact dimensions of the India-spec X1 LWB. For reference, the iX1 LWB measures 4,616mm in length and has a 2,800mm wheelbase, giving an indication of the size of BMW's long-wheelbase models in India.
Growing demand for LWB models
The X1 LWB arrives as demand for long-wheelbase models grows in India's luxury car market. These models accounted for more than half of BMW India's sales in the first half of 2026, when BMW Group sold over 9,000 cars. SUVs made up a large share of these sales. The X1 LWB extends BMW's long-wheelbase strategy to its entry-level luxury SUV range.
