Maruti Suzuki Wagon R flex fuel introduced — India's first mass-market flex fuel car is here
- 1India's first mass-market flex fuel passenger car
- 2Compatible with ethanol blends from E20 to E85
- 3E85 means up to 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent petrol
Maruti Suzuki has introduced the Wagon R Flex Fuel, making it the country's first mass-market passenger car capable of running on E85 fuel, an ethanol-petrol blend with up to 85 percent ethanol content. The launch took place on June 4, 2026, in the presence of Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, and Hardeep Singh Puri, Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas. Prices have not been announced yet.
The choice of the Wagon R to carry this milestone is deliberate. It is not a niche product. It is one of the country's most consistently popular hatchbacks, purchased by first-time buyers, daily commuters, and fleet operators in equal measure. Putting flex fuel technology in a car this mainstream signals that this is not an experiment. It is a direction.
Maruti Suzuki Wagon R flex fuel introduced — What E85 actually mean?

The number in "E85" indicates the percentage of ethanol in the fuel blend. E85 contains up to 85% ethanol and 15% petrol, while E20, the current standard in India, contains 20% ethanol and 80% petrol. The Maruti Suzuki Wagon R Flex Fuel can run on any blend between E20 and E85, allowing it to use different ethanol-petrol mixtures depending on fuel availability.
Using higher ethanol blends such as E85 is a significant shift from conventional petrol. Ethanol produces lower carbon emissions and can be sourced domestically from crops such as sugarcane, maize, and broken rice. This helps reduce dependence on imported crude oil and supports India's agricultural sector.
What had to change in the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R flex fuel engine
Flex fuel compatibility is not simply a software update. The Wagon R's existing petrol engine has been recalibrated to handle the variable fuel mix. This involves ethanol-compatible materials in fuel system components, adaptive sensors that monitor the blend and adjust the engine's air-fuel ratio and ignition timing accordingly, and modified fuel injectors. Ethanol has different combustion characteristics from petrol, so the engine management system needs to respond intelligently to whatever blend it is running on.
Infrastructure challenge
Here is where the honest conversation gets complicated. Even with the car ready, the fuel is not easy to find. At present, E85 dispensing is limited to around 50 to 100 outlets, primarily in the Delhi-NCR region and along the Mumbai-Nagpur corridor. For a vehicle to be practically useful to everyday buyers, the fuel needs to be available everywhere the vehicle is likely to travel.

The government is aware of this gap. Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri has stated that E85 fuel rollout is coming "soon" and that it will be priced significantly lower than current E20 petrol, which should make it an attractive option for cost-conscious buyers. The government has also set a target of 5,000 E85 dispensing outlets across India by the end of 2027. That is an ambitious number, and if achieved, it would transform the practical case for flex fuel vehicles considerably.
Maruti Wagon R Flex Fuel reaches production after two years of development
The Wagon R Flex Fuel was first shown at the Bharat Mobility Expo in early 2024. It has taken over two years to reach production, which reflects the complexity of aligning vehicle readiness with regulatory frameworks and fuel infrastructure planning. Now that it is here, other manufacturers will likely watch the reception closely. The Wagon R is a test case for whether Indian consumers and the fuelling ecosystem can support flex fuel at scale.

For now, the car exists ahead of the infrastructure that makes it most useful. But the infrastructure is being built, and the government backing behind this launch is substantial. Whether you see this as the beginning of a genuine fuel transition or a policy milestone that still needs real-world follow-through, the Wagon R Flex Fuel is a car that belongs in the conversation about what India's mobility future looks like.
