Mercedes-Benz has launched the S450e, the first plug-in hybrid version of the S-Class in India. Prices start at Rs 2.20 crore (ex-showroom) for the Launch Edition, while the Manufaktur Edition is priced at Rs 2.38 crore (ex-showroom).

The Mercedes-Benz S450e combines a 3.0-litre turbo-petrol inline-six engine with a 22 kWh battery pack and a 120 kW electric motor. Together, the system produces 449 bhp and 680 Nm of torque.

Mercedes-Benz claims an electric-only range of up to 115 km, allowing many daily city drives to be completed without using the petrol engine. For longer journeys, the petrol engine works alongside the electric motor to provide additional range and performance. The S450e also supports 60 kW DC fast charging, helping reduce charging times and making regular use of the electric mode more practical.

Mercedes-Benz S-Class PHEV features & design

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class PHEV retains the luxury and technology expected from the S-Class. Key features include a 13.1-inch infotainment touchscreen, twin wireless controllers, a 31-speaker Burmester sound system, and 15 airbags. On the outside, the sedan gets a revised grille, new alloy wheel designs, and updated tail lamp graphics. While the styling remains familiar to the S-Class, these changes help distinguish the plug-in hybrid version from earlier models.

Competitive positioning against traditional luxury rivals

The Mercedes-Benz S450e enters the luxury sedan segment as a rival to the BMW 7 Series. With plug-in hybrid technology, it offers a combination of electric driving capability, long-distance usability, and luxury features. Mercedes-Benz claims a fuel efficiency figure of 32.3 kmpl in hybrid mode, which can help reduce fuel consumption compared to a conventional petrol-powered luxury sedan.

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class PHEV is available in two versions: the Launch Edition priced at Rs 2.20 crore and the Manufaktur Edition AMG Line priced at Rs 2.38 crore (ex-showroom). This gives buyers a choice between two equipment levels within the S-Class range.
