Outline

Slate, an Amazon-backed electric vehicle startup, has filed a design patent in India for its Purple Reign electric SUV, indicating a possible future entry into the Indian market. This comes as the company prepares for its North American launch.

In the US, pre-orders for the model begin on June 24 with a USD 50 deposit, and production deliveries are scheduled for late 2026. The Purple Reign follows a different approach to EV design, focusing on modular customisation and user-defined configurations instead of fixed factory specifications commonly seen in traditional carmaking.

Slate Purple Reign offers fully customizable EV with modular design

The Purple Reign uses a modular, build-to-order system instead of fixed variants. Customers can choose individual parts of the car based on their needs rather than selecting preset trim levels.

Options include body style, interior materials, features, speakers, lighting, and colours, all selected separately.

This allows buyers to avoid bundled features they do not want. For example, someone can choose better audio without adding extra tech packages, or keep the setup simple while selecting only the design and features they prefer.

Slate Purple Reign adopts bring-your-own-device infotainment system for EV

The Purple Reign does not use a fixed infotainment screen on the dashboard. Instead, it has built-in slots for smartphones, which act as the main infotainment system. The system supports mounting, charging, and basic integration so the phone can be used for navigation, media, and other functions while driving. This setup avoids a built-in touchscreen and uses the customer’s own device instead. It also helps reduce hardware cost and removes the issue of outdated infotainment systems, since smartphones receive regular updates and can be replaced independently of the vehicle.

The Purple Reign is powered by a 150 kW rear-mounted electric motor producing 201 bhp. It is available with two battery pack options offering 241 km and 382 km of range.  The Purple Reign also supports home charging through both 120V standard household outlets and 240V higher-capacity connections, depending on residential electrical setups. It also supports 120 kW DC fast charging, which can charge the battery from 20% to 80% in around 30 minutes, helping reduce charging time on longer journeys.

Market entry timing and India patent significance

Slate’s India patent filing does not confirm an immediate launch in the country. It mainly reflects a strategy to secure intellectual property ahead of possible future expansion. The company is currently focused on the US market, with deliveries planned from 2026, which will help it build production and customer experience before any international move.

India’s growing EV market and manufacturing base make it a potential future opportunity for Slate’s modular and cost-focused approach. The patent suggests that the company sees value in protecting its design in India, even without a confirmed entry plan. At the moment, a launch in India remains uncertain. However, the filing keeps the option open for future expansion.
