Outline

When Tesla entered India in July 2025, most of the talk was about the cars. Price, import duties, and whether they made sense here. Almost a year later, the focus is shifting. It’s less about the car now, more about everything around it.

Recently, alongside the launch of the six-seater Tesla Model Y L, Tesla India’s country head, Sharad Agarwal, shared what comes next. The plan is to expand charging, service, and overall support. Seven new Supercharger stations are being added on key highways. Four more cities are getting service centres this quarter. Home charging support now reaches 28 states.

Tesla’s India strategy focuses on charging first, sales later

In most markets, EV makers treat charging as just support. Tesla treats it like a core product. Its Supercharger network is a big reason people choose Tesla. In the US, it has over 30,000 stalls. In China, more than 2,500.

In India, the number is just 20. It sounds small, and it is. But context matters. Tesla began deliveries only in September 2025. Yet it already has five stations running in Gurugram, Delhi, Mumbai BKC, and Navi Mumbai. This shows the company is building infrastructure ahead of demand, not waiting for sales to catch up.

Agarwal made this clear. Tesla wants charging to fit into the daily lives of its customers. Its site choices reflect that. The Navi Mumbai station, opened on April 6, 2026, is inside Nexus Seawoods mall. It is the first mall-based Supercharger in India. The idea is simple. You charge while you shop. Charging becomes part of your routine, not a separate task.

Tesla’s Supercharger expansion makes long-distance drives possible in India

Currently, Tesla owners in India face a clear limitation. Charging is mostly limited to home or a few public stations in Delhi, Gurugram, and Mumbai. Trips like Delhi to Jaipur or Mumbai to Pune are still difficult without reliable charging in between. That is set to change. Tesla plans to add seven new Supercharger stations along key highways connecting cities like Delhi, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Chennai. This will make intercity EV travel much more practical for the first time.

This matters because the Model Y L has a claimed range of 681 km. In real conditions, it will be lower. Even at about 70 to 75% efficiency, you still get around 475 to 510 km per charge. That makes routes like Delhi to Jaipur at 280 km or Delhi to Chandigarh at 250 km easy single-charge drives once highway charging is available.

Tesla’s V4 Superchargers in India can deliver up to 250 kW. At the Navi Mumbai station, the Model Y can add up to 275 km of range in just 15 minutes. That is barely a stop. Just enough time for a quick coffee break.

Why Tesla’s home charging network

Public Superchargers get the attention, but most EV owners actually rely on home charging. Tesla has already expanded its home charging support across 28 states in India. It can install a Wall Connector at a customer’s home almost anywhere, not just in metro cities.

This matters because India’s apartment living has always been seen as a challenge for EV charging. Many buildings do not have dedicated charging points. Tesla addresses this by handling the installation process itself, instead of leaving customers to manage it on their own. For buyers who can set it up, daily charging becomes simple. Plug in at night and wake up to a full charge. Public chargers are then mainly for longer trips.

How Tesla sells and services cars in India without dealerships

Tesla has no dealerships in India and does not plan to have any. It operates three experience centres in Mumbai, Delhi, and Gurugram, along with service and bodyshop facilities in Delhi, Gurugram, and Pune. By the end of this quarter, it will expand to Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Ahmedabad.

Its service approach relies heavily on software-led diagnostics. Many issues that would need a workshop visit in traditional cars can be fixed remotely through over-the-air updates. This reduces the need for a large physical service network, which is especially useful in India.

Tesla also follows a direct-to-consumer model. Since September 2025, it has delivered cars across 21 states without dealerships. Customers simply order online and get the car delivered to their doorstep.

There is one limitation. This model works well for software fixes and routine needs but not for physical repairs after accidents or part failures. That is why expanding bodyshop facilities to more cities is important and not just symbolic.
