The Volkswagen Tayron—essentially a 3-row Taigun—has been spotted on the Indian roads for the first time on test, wearing MH temporary registration plates. The Volkswagen Tayron is said to hit the Indian market later this year and lock its horns with the Skoda Kodiaq, MG Gloster and Toyota Fortuner.

Volkswagen Tayron 3-row SUV incoming

With the new Tayron, Volkswagen will re-enter the 3-row SUV segment in India ever since the discontinuation of the Tiguan Allspace. The first images of the upcoming Tayron reveal its design, which largely resembles that of the Tiguan R Line. However, a big difference between the two models—apart from the obvious—is the fact that the Tayron is said to be brought to the Indian market as a CKD, whereas the Tiguan R Line is a direct import.

Volkswagen Tayron exterior details

Since the model on test was captured without any camouflage, it reveals a slew of design details that could be offered on the India-spec model. Up front, the Tayron features sleek LED headlights with a connected LED light bar and a large mesh grille to feed air to the powertrain. Around the side, the Tayron exemplifies its increased length—231mm to be precise—over the Tiguan. What’s interesting to note is that the Tayron was spotted with an R badge under the side mirrors—hinting towards a possible R Line variant for the 3-row SUV. At the back, the Tayron features a connected LED lightbar and accentuated bumper with mesh finish.

Volkswagen Tayron interior and features

On the inside, the Tayron dashboard largely resembles that of the Tayron. The cabin is anticipated to feature a minimalist, button-free design, highlighted by a 15-inch infotainment touchscreen dominating the dashboard and a 10.25-inch fully digital instrument cluster in front of the driver. Likely features include a panoramic sunroof, ambient lighting, three-zone climate control, wireless phone charging, Level 2 ADAS, and more.

Volkswagen Tayron engine details

On the powertrain front, the Tayron is likely to feature the same 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine that powers the Tiguan R Line. This engine develops 204PS of power and 320Nm of torque, all of which goes to all four wheels via a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Since Volkswagen group is actively considering bringing in diesel engines back to India, the Tayron could be the first one to resurrect the TDI engines under the Volkswagen brand in the Indian market.
