Evolution of XUV500 Across the Years
- 1Launched in 2011 as the first monocoque SUV by an Indian carmaker
- 2Evolved through multiple facelifts, adding power, luxury, and modern tech each time
- 3Discontinued in 2021, passing the legacy to the feature-rich Mahindra XUV700
When Mahindra launched the XUV500 in 2011, SUVs didn’t enjoy the kind of mass popularity as they do today. The market had a well-defined niche with the likes of Fortuner and Endeavour appealing to the mid-luxury segment, while the Bolero and Scorpio served well as Utility vehicles designed for rough use.
Mahindra cleverly positioned the XUV500 between these two ends of the value spectrum and introduced the concept of a premium SUV to the mass market. Through all these years, this pioneering mid-size SUV went through overhauls, technological upgradation, engine fine-tuning, and all, before finally passing the baton to XUV700 in 2021. So keep reading as we’re going over the legacy and evolution of the Mahindra XUV500 over the years.
Mahindra XUV500 History
Way back in 2011, when Mahindra rolled out the XUV500, it was more than an SUV; it was a declaration. Up until then, Mahindra had been known mainly for rugged, uncomplicated utility vehicles like the Major, Armada, Scorpio and Bolero. The XUV500 was different. It was modern, feature-loaded, and, above all, India's first monocoque SUV by an Indian carmaker. It was a gigantic leap in design and engineering terms.
As a high-end SUV, it had magnificent cheetah-inspired styling, a strong diesel engine, and loads of bells and whistles, segment-first features. It appealed to Indian consumers seeking a combination of style, space, power, and affordability. Moreover, even though it was discontinued in 2021, the XUV500 is still extremely popular in the used car market.
First XUV500 (2011–2015)
After spending nearly ₹850 crores over 4 years for its development, the initial XUV500 made waves with its edgy design, razor-sharp lines, paw-shaped door handles, and a front grille that let out a loud attitude. It came with a 2.2L mHawk diesel motor that churned out 140 bhp and was combined with a 6-speed manual transmission.
The one thing that made it all the more appealing was the amount of equipment it carried on board, like touchscreen infotainment, GPS navigation, alloy wheels, dual airbags, ABS with EBD, and even hill-hold and hill-descent control in top trims. And at that time, that was reasonably rare in the ₹11 to ₹15 lakh price bracket.
As a result, it became another Mahindra best seller after the Scorpio and Thar. Mahindra needed to do several production ramp-ups just to supply them. It wasn't perfect, and there were some problems with electronics and build quality, but it had built a loyal fan base.
Mahindra XUV500 First Facelift (2015)
In 2015, Mahindra provided the XUV500 with its first major facelift. It was given a new grille, chrome finish, new alloy wheels, and new interiors. But the most significant change was underneath. The W10 trim, which debuted with this facelift, featured an electric sunroof, push-button start keyless entry, a 6-way adjustable driver seat, and more advanced infotainment. Refinement levels improved even more, particularly with respect to cabin insulation and general fit-and-finish. To date, 2015 variants are the most popular among used Mahindra XUV500 models.
The 2018 Facelift: The Most Premium XUV Yet
Mahindra still wasn't done with upgrading the XUV500. In 2018, the popular mid-size SUV received its most detailed facelift. There, the styling received a major makeover with a new front grille with chrome studs, projector headlamps with LED DRLs, new tail lamps, and new restyled bumpers.
On the inside, it felt much more premium than earlier models, with quilted tan leather seats, a soft-touch finish on the dashboard, and an improved infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The engine also received a tweak, and the power increased to 155 bhp and 360 Nm of torque. It was smoother, more responsive, and gave a much better driving experience, particularly with the optional automatic transmission.
Technological Innovations Over the Years
One area where Mahindra hit the bullseye with the XUV500 was in terms of features and refinement. It eventually did this with the introduction of:
- Touchscreen with smartphone integration and a Navigation system
- Smart Key & Push-Button Start
- Sunroof & Ambient Lighting
Emergency Call FunctionMahindra BlueSense App-based features
Mahindra understood that Indians loved feature-packed cars, and the XUV500 always delivered on that front.
Mahindra XUV500 Market Success and Popularity
Over time, the XUV500 established a solid niche for itself in the ₹12–20 lakh SUV market. It won over buyers from the family crowd, road-trip enthusiasts, and those stepping up from sedans or compact SUVs. For most Indians, the XUV500 was the first taste of a "big car" experience.
Even with stiff competition from new entrants in the shape of the Tata Harrier, MG Hector, and Hyundai Creta, the XUV500 retained its position with sheer value and presence. By 2014, Mahindra had already sold more than 1.5 lakh units of the XUV500, a record accomplishment for any Indian premium SUV.
