61 kWh Battery Pack & Powertrain

The E3 trim has a 61 kWh Lithium Iron-Phosphate (LFP) battery pack, known for its thermal stability and long-term degradation resistance. This high-voltage setup channels energy to a front-wheel-drive electric motor that pushes out 172 bhp and 193 Nm of torque. And since electric motors deliver peak torque right from the get-go, acceleration off the line is instant. The power delivery also does not dip, which lets the car climb highway cruising speeds without any noticeable strain or mechanical noise.

Driving Modes & Regeneration

Drivers can easily switch between different drive modes to change the vehicle’s throttle response, which either saves the car’s energy or delivers punchier highway performance. Then there’s the advanced regenerative braking system, which captures kinetic energy during deceleration and channels it back into the battery. However, Toyota could have also added physical paddle shifters in the vehicle to control the regeneration levels. And the regeneration level can only be adjusted when the vehicle is completely stationary.

This vehicle stays quite planted while on the move, thanks to its heavy battery and sophisticated suspension setup.

City Driving

The electric powertrain does not exhibit typical internal combustion engine vibrations, which naturally keeps the cabin’s environment whisper-quiet. The electronic parking brake with an auto-hold function takes away the physical stress of constantly working the accelerator as well. Assisted by an incredibly tight 5.2-metre turning radius and a light, responsive electric power steering, the Toyota Urban Cruiser Ebella handles city commutes without any issues. Its suspension setup handles most speed breakers and minor road imperfections with a dampened thud. 

Highway Driving

This vehicle's 1,815 kg kerb weight actually works in its favour on the highways. Body roll is well-controlled through sweeping corners, while the aerodynamic exterior styling actively reduces wind noise at triple-digit speeds. The 18-inch disc brakes on all four wheels have highly predictable and confidence-inspiring stopping power. It rides on striking 18-inch machine-cut alloy wheels and features a panoramic fixed glass roof overhead that enhances the cabin’s airiness. The sophisticated interior is also treated to a 10.1-inch multimedia touchscreen, a JBL premium audio system, a wireless smartphone charger, and highly comfortable ventilated front seats. Most importantly, the E3 trim houses Toyota's Level 2 ADAS suite and a 360-degree panoramic monitor. This advanced safety network includes essential features like adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.

The vehicle's 61 kWh battery has an impressive ARAI-certified range of 543 km on a single full charge. When hooked up to a compatible DC fast charger via its CCS2 port, the battery juices up quickly from 10 to 80 per cent in approximately 45 minutes. Alternatively, standard home charging is supported via a 7.2 kW AC wall-mount charger. And the battery pack gets an eight-year warranty or up to 200,000 km, whichever comes first.

Front Profile

Toyota has integrated a sleek, hammerhead-style front bumper up front that looks quite aggressive and modern. Other elements here include sharp LED headlamps with integrated LED DRLs, a dedicated auto-levelling function, and a completely closed-off upper grille for less aerodynamic drag.

Side Profile

The side flexes the car’s muscular, extended wheel arches and stylish body side mouldings. This crossover sits on large 18-inch machine-cut alloy wheels, and they fill the wheel arches without leaving any gaps. The dual-tone exterior paint versions especially stand out a lot from this angle.

Rear Profile

The rear execution is clean and sharp. A high-mounted stop lamp, a prominent roof end spoiler, and connected LED tail lamps dominate the tailgate. The bumper also houses a reverse parking camera, while an electronic tailgate function makes accessing the boot space behind fairly convenient.

This car has a refreshingly upmarket feel to it when you enter its cabin. Toyota’s intent to capture the premium EV buyer becomes quite clear.

The dashboard utilises a dual-screen layout with premium synthetic leather touchpoints. The driver gets a height-adjustable seat, a tilt and telescopic steering wheel, and a grand centre console housing a practical cup holder and accessory socket. Both the driver and the front passenger are treated to ventilated seats wrapped in a fabric and synthetic leather combination.

Second Row

Rear-seat passengers enjoy generous legroom. The flat floor, courtesy of the electric skateboard platform, means three adults can comfortably share the rear bench on shorter trips. The 40:20:40 split rear seats feature a sliding and reclining cushion mechanism, which lets occupants customise their seating posture. Rear AC vents and a centre armrest with cupholders are available, too.

Boot Space, Storage & Practicality

Sitting at 244 litres by default, the Toyota Urban Cruiser Ebella’s rear seats, when slid forward, unlock up to 300 litres of cargo area for large family suitcases. Storage practicality is well-executed across the cabin, too, with a dedicated luggage shelf, a lower centre box, seatback pockets, etc

The Toyota Urban Cruiser Ebella has a 10.1-inch multimedia touchscreen sitting at the centre of its dashboard, offering wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There’s a 10.25-inch TFT digital combimeter on the side, projecting crucial vehicle telemetry, safety alerts, and battery status directly into the driver’s line of sight.

The acoustic duties are left to a premium JBL audio system that comes with a dedicated subwoofer and tweeters and delivers excellent sound separation and punchy bass. There’s also a PM 2.5 air purifier filter, ambient lighting across the door lines and console, and a fixed glass panoramic roof. For more convenience, the crossover includes a wireless smartphone charger, a keyless push-start system, and advanced connected car features that allow owners to schedule charging, monitor battery health, and pre-cool the cabin remotely.

No compromises have been made regarding the safety suite of this car. Although it’s yet to be tested, the platform is the same as that of the e Vitara, which has a 5-star Bharat NCAP crash rating.

Passive Safety

The structural foundation can absorb and deflect high-impact collision forces away from the battery pack and cabin. Inside, 7 airbags come as standard equipment; they cover the driver, passenger, front sides, curtains, and even include a driver knee airbag. Other passive safeguards found inside are front seatbelt pretensioners with force limiters and ISOFIX child seat anchorages.

Active Safety

The all-four 18-inch disc brakes of the Toyota Urban Cruiser Ebella are supported by ABS, EBD, and Vehicle Stability Control (VSC). The vehicle also features a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), hill hold control, and a multi-collision braking system. And with the advanced Level 2 ADAS suite, you get features like adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a pre-collision system. A 360-degree panoramic monitor camera is also available.

The Toyota Urban Cruiser Ebella price tag faces heat from several other EVs, like the Maruti Suzuki e Vitara, MG ZS EV, and Tata Curvv EV.

Maruti Suzuki e Vitara

Being its mechanical twin, the Maruti Suzuki e Vitara is the most direct competitor. While the Maruti offers a significantly lower base price of around ₹15.99 lakh for its entry-level trims, it misses out on some of Toyota's premium interior treatments and the distinct hammerhead front styling.

MG ZS EV

Priced highly competitively at ₹17.99 lakh onwards, the MG ZS EV offers a 50.3 kWh battery pack and a highly sorted, tech-forward cabin. It feels incredibly plush inside and delivers strong urban performance, but the Toyota counters with a significantly larger battery and superior claimed range.

Tata Curvv EV

The Tata Curvv EV, starting from ₹16.99 lakh, offers a highly distinctive coupe-SUV silhouette. It boasts excellent driving dynamics and a 500-litre boot. But the Toyota Urban Cruiser Ebella asks for its higher premium by packing a larger 61 kWh battery and a highly flexible, sliding rear-seat layout.

Assessing both its strong points and compromises is vital before paying the final Toyota Urban Cruiser Ebella price.

The Toyota Urban Cruiser Ebella is a sensible car if zero-emission motoring and silent commutes are preferred more than anything else. But the positives don’t end there, either. You get a 500-plus kilometre driving range, a structurally solid body shell and a Level 2 ADAS suite that minimises the possibility of an accident. Comfort-wise, there’s the crisp JBL audio system and the highly flexible sliding rear seats for long-distance family touring.

But some buyers might find the E3 trim a bit expensive. The Maruti Suzuki e Vitara is relatively cheaper, and it offers almost the same package. There’s also the Tata Curvv EV, an alternative that you can pick up at a lower price, and take a much more striking coupe-SUV design home. But if you value Toyota's legendary after-sales service reliability, final investment in the Toyota Urban Cruiser Ebella should leave no room for second thoughts.
