Outline

Maruti Suzuki has launched the Wagon R flex fuel at Rs 7.24 lakh (ex-showroom), making it India's first mass-market flex-fuel passenger car. The hatchback can run on anything from E20 petrol to E100 ethanol, giving owners more flexibility in the type of fuel they use.

To make this possible, Maruti has updated the Wagon R's existing petrol engine with components that can handle higher ethanol content. The car can automatically detect the fuel blend in the tank and adjust the engine settings accordingly, allowing it to run smoothly whether it is using petrol, ethanol or a mix of both.

Maruti unveiled the Wagon R Bioflex at the start of June 2026 and has now confirmed its pricing. The car looks identical to the regular Wagon R on the outside and inside. Under the bonnet, however, the familiar 1.2-litre K12N four-cylinder engine has been reworked to handle ethanol-blended fuels from E20 all the way to E100. The car has been homologated with E85, meaning 85% ethanol blended with petrol, but is mechanically capable of running on pure ethanol as well.

Power output stands at 90bhp and 113.7Nm of torque, paired with a five-speed manual gearbox. There is no CVT or automatic option available at this stage. The Wagon R flex fuel is built on the ZXi+ trim level, so it comes loaded with a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, steering-mounted controls, six airbags, fog lamps, alloy wheels, and electrically adjustable and folding ORVMs.

Maruti Suzuki Wagon R flex fuel price and who can buy it

The Wagon R Bioflex is priced at Rs 7.24 lakh (ex-showroom) regardless of paint colour, whether metallic or non-metallic. That is Rs 86,000 over the standard ZXi+ petrol manual, which sits at Rs 6.38 lakh. There is no dual-tone option available on the Wagon R flex fuel.

VariantPrice (ex-showroom)Vs Standard ZXi+
Wagon R flex fuel (Non-Metallic)Rs 7.24 lakh+ Rs 86,000
Wagon R flex fuel (Metallic)Rs 7.24 lakh+ Rs 86,000

One important caveat: the Wagon R flex fuel is currently limited to commercial buyers only. Private consumers cannot purchase it yet. This puts it in the same regulatory lane as other flex-fuel pilots in India, where commercial fleets act as early adopters while the fuelling infrastructure builds out.

Ethanol infrastructure in India

The Wagon R Bioflex's wider appeal depends entirely on one thing: where can you actually fill it up? As of now, E85 dispensing outlets are limited to select locations in Delhi-NCR and along the Mumbai-Nagpur corridor. The government has set a target of 5,000 such outlets by the end of 2027. Until that network grows meaningfully, the Bioflex will remain a niche, fleet-first product regardless of how competitive its price is.

E85 fuel is currently priced at around Rs 82 per litre in Delhi, which is roughly Rs 20 less than E20 petrol. On a cost-per-kilometre basis, the math could work out in the Bioflex's favour as E85 access spreads. Nitin Gadkari also cleared E100 fuel regulations just a day before the Wagon R flex fuel launch price was announced, which signals broader intent from the government. Maruti is the first out of the gate, but automakers including Toyota, Hyundai, and MG have been listed as brands expected to follow with their own E100-compatible vehicles.

For now, the Wagon R Bioflex sits at a sensible price point for what it offers: a well-equipped, familiar hatchback that could quietly become an important chapter in India's transition toward greener fuels, once the pumps catch up.
