Outline

Of late, EV manufacturers in India have been offering several perks in order to lure customers to switch to EVs. We have seen perks like discounted/free public charging, lifetime battery warranty and buyback plans. While these perks were first introduced by MG, Tata Motors has also adopted some of these perks in order to boost the ownership experience. In this article, we share the terms and conditions related to the recent announcement of Tata EVs lifetime battery warranty, currently applicable on models such as the Harrier EV, Nexon EV 45 and the Curvv EV.

Is the Tata EV battery warranty actually lifetime?

Contrary to common perception, “lifetime” in this context doesn’t mean forever. As per the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, Tata defines Lifetime as a period of 15 years from the date of first registration of the vehicle at the local Regional Transport Office (RTO). The warranty applies to the High Voltage (HV) Battery, a critical and expensive component in electric vehicles, ensuring peace of mind for EV owners over the long term.

Are you eligible for lifetime battery warranty?

The Lifetime HV Battery Warranty is available only under specific ownership and usage conditions:

  • Private individuals (in personal use)
  • Company perk cars registered for employees (including future transfers to the same employee)

Non-eligible owners/use cases:

  • Commercial usage: fleets, taxis, test drives, or display/demo vehicles
  • Vehicles registered under a company, firm, trust, or similar legal entity
  • Transfer of company perk cars to a third party (not the original employee)

Lifetime battery warranty applicable to second owner?

Yes, unlike MG Motor India, Tata Motors does offer the lifetime battery warranty to the second owner of the vehicle. However, Tata has made it mandatory for second or subsequent owners to notify the company in the event of a vehicle ownership transfer. Failing to do so will result in ineligibility for the lifetime battery warranty. Additionally, when a vehicle is resold, the date of first registration and initial mileage remain the baseline for warranty calculations — not the date of resale.

Will depletion in battery health be covered under warranty?

The HV Battery Warranty covers the State of Health (SOH) of the battery. If the battery’s SOH drops below 70% of its nominal energy capacity during the warranty period, Tata will repair or replace the battery. In such cases, Tata guarantees: Restoration of the battery’s energy capacity to either the pre-repair steady-state SOH, or 80% SOH, whichever is higher. Tata also clarifies that gradual energy loss over time is natural and not covered under warranty unless it crosses the 70% SOH threshold.
